WVU Welcomes Hampton Tuesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s basketball team hosts Hampton University in the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Tuesday, March 24, at the WVU Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
With a victory on Tuesday, the Mountaineers (19-14) will advance to the WNIT third round for the second time in program history, joining the 2005 squad that finished as the tournament’s runner-up.
Tipoff for Tuesday’s contest is set for 7 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum. General admission tickets are $7, while youth tickets are $4. Carey’s Crew members receive free admission courtesy of United Bank, while students are also free. A valid student ID or Carey’s Crew membership card must be shown to receive the free ticket. The first 100 Carey’s Crew members in attendance will receive free pizza from Papa John’s.
A discounted group rate of $4 is available, but must be purchased in advance. To purchase tickets, visit WVUGAME.com or call 1-800-WVU GAME. Flex plan tickets cannot be redeemed for WNIT games.
A free live stream of Tuesday’s contest will be provided at WVUsports.com. Jeff Culhane and Meg Bulger are set to call the action on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans can listen on various affiliates across the state, online at WVUsports.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.
West Virginia reeled off its highest offensive output since December with an 84-61 win over Buffalo last Thursday in the opening round of the WNIT. Four Mountaineers tallied double-figures, as Teana Muldrow and Bria Holmes led the way with 20 points each.
WVU has won 14 consecutive home games against nonconference opponents. The Mountaineers are 15-3 at home this season and are 86-6 against nonconference at home since 2002. The 6.5 blocks per game for WVU is fifth nationally. Lanay Montgomery leads the team and the Big 12 with an average of 3.3 blocks per contest.
All-America candidate Bria Holmes continues to pace the Mountaineers with 19.2 points per game. Holmes’ 635 points this season is the most in a single season by a WVU junior. All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Averee Fields is second on the team with 13.0 points per contest.
West Virginia and Hampton (19-12) are meeting for the second time on Tuesday. The two programs last met on November 24, 1979, when the Mountaineers won 90-78 in the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore.
The Lady Pirates have won five consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles. Hampton won eight consecutive games before falling to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the MEAC Championship quarterfinals.
Hampton is third nationally with a +8.19 turnover margin and sixth in the NCAA with 11.6 steals per game. First team All-MEAC honoree Malia Tate-DeFreitas leads the Lady Pirates with 21.3 points per game. Kyani White is also in double-figures for HU, averaging 10.5 points per contest.
The winner of Tuesday’s contest will advance to the WNIT third round to take on the winner of Richmond/Duquesne. A date, time and campus site will be announced following the conclusion of Tuesday’s games.
