AUSTIN, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team dropped the rubber match, 5-1, at No. 16 Texas on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Mountaineers (8-8, 1-2) drop the series after splitting a pair of 10-inning games on Friday and Saturday. West Virginia finished with one run on seven hits, while Texas had five runs on eight hits. Each team had one error.
"I'm really proud of our guys. I thought at bats were really good all day," coach Randy Mazey said. "Their starter only struck us out once and I thought we hit a lot of balls right at them. We came down here and competed really well."
Despite taking the loss, sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (2-3) had a nice outing, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings.
"I thought he was really good. He through five zeros up in a row," Mazey said. "With our at bats I thought we had a couple of chances to score and we didn't do it."
Donato had retired 11 Texas batters in a row before the Longhorns scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Zane Gurwitz led off with a single up the middle and was plated by a Collin Shaw double to left field, opening the scoring. Brooks Marlow then drove in Shaw with a single to center field and Marlow scored on a fielding error in right field by sophomore Shaun Wood.
Wood made up for his mistake in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to right field, his second of the season, to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Texas added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning as Shaw hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Gurwitz crossed home plate before WVU got an out on a pickoff play.
Sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer had two hits to lead the Mountaineers at the plate. Shaw and Bret Boswell had two hits apiece for the Longhorns.
The win went to Chad Hollingsworth (2-1), who allowed one run on five hits with one strikeout and one walk in 7.0 innings.
