MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s diving teams finished the final day of competition earlier today at the 2015 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in Buffalo, New York.
During the three days of competition, women’s competitors were looking for a top-seven finish to secure an NCAA Championship qualification, while men’s competitors were searching for a top-six result.
The Mountaineers had participants today in the men’s platform diving event.
“It was a great day for tower,” said diving coach Michael Grapner. “This is a tough event to train for and our divers, since we don’t have a tower for training.”
On the men’s tower, freshman Alex Obendorf earned a 12th-place overall finish with a combined score of 595.20. Obendorf recorded a 294.35 mark in the preliminary session and a career-best 300.85 score in the finals.
Freshman Michael Proietto placed 16th overall with a combined mark of 507.35. Proietto scored 286.35 in the finals session and 221.00 in the preliminary round.
“Alex and Mike both set goals for the meet and did a great job achieving personal-bests today,” Grapner said. “Alex was able to beat his prelim score and break the 300 mark. At Big 12, he went 299.90. Overall, the divers did great this week.
“We have been so close with qualifying for the NCAA meet. I’m determined to get some divers qualified.”
With the conclusion of the NCAA Zones, the West Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams’ seasons have come to a close.
Tim Squires and Andrew Marsh of the West Virginia men’s swimming team will compete at the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from March 26-28 in Iowa City, Iowa.
