MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s diving teams finished the second of three days of competition earlier today at the 2015 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in Buffalo, New York.
Throughout the three days of competition, women’s competitors will be looking for a top-seven finish to secure an NCAA Championship qualification, while men’s competitors will be searching for a top-six result.
The women’s 1-meter championship saw two Mountaineers qualify for the finals. Senior Haily VandePoel finished 12th in the preliminary session with a 255.20 mark to earn a spot in the finals, while junior Lindsay Schmidt placed 16th in the prelim session with a score of 245.45.
In the finals, VandePoel scored 244.65. Her combined score of 499.85 earned her a 13th-place finish overall. Schmidt recorded a 242.50 score in the finals for a 15th-place overall finish and a combined 487.95 mark.
Senior Jennifer Rey placed 34th with a prelim score of 222.10.
“It was a good day for the divers,” said diving coach Michael Grapner. “Lindsay and Haily both had consistent meets and made the finals. It’s a bittersweet day today as both Jen and Haily finished their collegiate season and completed their final dives. They were my first official recruits to WVU, and I’m thankful they helped set the standard for the WVU diving program.”
For the men on the 3-meter board, freshman Alex Obendorf placed 22nd overall with a prelim score of 283.45. Freshman Michael Proietto finished 27th with a prelim mark of 266.10.
“On the men’s side, they both had some good dives,” Grapner said. “Unfortunately, neither Mike nor Alex made it back for the finals. However, they gained valuable experience being here, and it will help for next year as they know how to prepare for the meet.”
Day three of competition of the Zone A Championships will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m., with the men’s and women’s platform diving events.
