Spurgeon Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Placing first in both smallbore and air rifle in WVU’s match against Kentucky, and helping his team to a second consecutive regular-season conference win, West Virginia University rifle junior Garrett Spurgeon has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Spurgeon shot 585 smallbore (192 kneeling, 200 prone, 193 standing) and 596 (100-98-99-100-100-99) air rifle. His air rifle score was one short of his career high, and his 200 prone matched a school record.
Spurgeon’s wins helped the Mountaineers (11-1, 8-0 GARC) earn their eighth Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) regular-season title. They will shoot an NCAA Qualifying score on February 21 at the WVU Rifle Range.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers travel to Geneva, Ohio, for the SPIRE Division I Indoor Track & FIeld Invitational ... the action will get underway at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia competed at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio ... the two-day event saw 12 season-best marks by Mountaineer competitors.
Notes & Quotes: The triple jump gold division saw Shamoya McNeil take fifth overall. McNeil’s personal-best jump of 12.08 meters was nearly two feet longer than her previous best mark in the event ... Maggie Drazba finished third in the one mile gold division race. It marked Drazba’s first appearance in an individual event this season, as she became the first Mountaineer to run a sub-5 mile this season, finishing in 4:55.69 ... The 400-meter dash blue division saw Christa D’Egidio register a season-best time of 58.18 to place third in the event ... The 800-meter run gold division saw Amy Cashin place third overall in a career-best time of 2:12.72. Brianna Kerekes raced to a first-place finish in the 800-meter run blue division ... Kerekes crossed the line in a season-best time of 2:15.59 in the event, while Rebecca Wendt finished sixth overall in the 800 blue in 2:20.15.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: WVU returns home to host Kansas in a 7 p.m. tilt on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The game will air regionally on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh. WVU then visits No. 3-ranked Baylor on Sunday, Feb. 15. The game airs nationally on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. ET.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia (14-9, 4-7 Big 12) went 1-1 on the week. The Mountaineers defeated TCU, 76-71, on Wednesday before falling, 61-43, at Iowa State on Saturday.

Coach Mike Carey: “When we got frustrated hitting our shots, it affected our defense,” said coach Mike Carey. “It just kept going. If you look at our shooting percentages, 29 (overall), 23 (three-point) and 50 percent at the foul line. That’s probably why you’re going to score 43 points.”
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers return to Morgantown on Friday, February 13, for a doubleheader against Youngstown State at 12 p.m. and Towson at 4 p.m., at Ridgeview Racquet Club … on Sunday, February 15, WVU squares off against California-Pennsylvania at 9 a.m., followed by Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m., at Ridgeview Racquet Club … free pizza is provided for the fans after each match.
Last Week in Tennis: WVU (3-1) clinched two road wins this weekend, as they defeated Buffalo, 5-2, at Miller Tennis Center on Friday, February 6, and Niagara, 6-1, at the SportsPlex on Saturday, February 7 … freshman Carolina Lewis made her debut this spring as she went 2-0 on the weekend at the No. 5 spot … freshmen duo Yvon Martinez and Habiba Shaker went 2-0 in doubles play, defeating Niagara and Buffalo at the No. 3 spot.

This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team (11-1, 8-0 GARC) is idle this week. They will return to the WVU Rifle Range on February 21 for a NCAA qualifying match.
Last Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team defeated Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foe, No. 5 Kentucky, for the regular-season GARC title, 4677-4663.

I think we’re in one of the best conferences, if not the best, in the country. That makes it that much better to win it. Everyone has things to work and improve on. We need to make sure our training is really high quality in the next couple weeks for the qualifying match. We’ll tweak the things we can improve on, keep our heads up and train hard.”

This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers will host Ohio University on Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum in a 1 p.m. dual ... prior to the match, West Virginia will honor six graduating seniors as part of the team’s annual Senior Day celebration.
Last Week in Wrestling: The WVU wrestling team finished the weekend with a 1-1 record. Led by a pin by Michael Morales at 141 and major decisions by Zeke Moisey and Cory Stainbrook, the Mountaineers downed Clarion by a score of 26-9 on Friday evening at Tippin Gym ... they squad then hosted Big 12 foe No. 8 Iowa State at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday. Despite wins by Moisey and A.J. Vizcarrondo, the Mountaineers fell to the Cyclones, 29-7 in front of a crowd of 1,207.
Notes and Quotes: Zeke Moisey and A.J. Vizcarrondo both went 2-0 on the weekend. Moisey posted a pair of major decisions – his fourth and fifth of the season – and now ranks tied for sixth in WVU history in wins by a freshman at 25 ... he is also tied for fifth in wins a 125. Moisey leads the team with 12 bonus-point victories that include five majors, five pins and a pair of tech. falls ... Vizcarrondo won a 6-1 decision over Clarion’s Josh Davis on Friday before putting the WVU Coliseum crowd on its feet with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Iowa State’s Quean Smith in a 5-4 decision

This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum and open a two-meet homestand against No. 18 Denver on Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. … it is a “Dollar Night,” and all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas will be available for $1 each.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU (6-5-1, 0-0-1) tallied its second straight road score of 195.0 or better with a second place, 195.3 score at New Hampshire on Sunday, Feb. 8 … UNH scored 196.525 and finished first, while Towson placed third with a 194.975 score and Brown finished fourth with a 193.475 mark … the Mountaineers relied on a season-best floor rotation of 49.175 to clinch their second-place finish … senior Dayah Haley paced the lineup with a winning, career-best 9.95 routine … freshman Zaakira Muhammad paced the team on vault (9.875) and bars (9.825) and finished first and second, respectively, on each event … freshman Jordan Gillette finished a team-best eighth (9.775) on beam.
