MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three members of the West Virginia men’s soccer team were named Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar Athletes, representing the ‘best of the best’ from the Academic All-MAC Team.
Senior Andy Bevin, junior Jamie Merriam and sophomore Jack Elliott all earned the honor after also earning All-MAC honors for their athletic play at the end of the season.
Bevin, who will graduate this May, holds a 3.93 GPA in management information systems and was the 2014 Capital One Men’s Soccer Academic All-American of the Year.
Elliott has a 4.00 GPA in geography and was named a Capital One Third Team Academic All-American, while Merriam has a 3.32 GPA in biometric systems.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a first-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the fall sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the ‘best of the best’ of the Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2014-15 season.
WVU finished the season with an 11-7-1 record and a second-place finish in the MAC. LeBlanc was named the MAC Coach of the Year, while Bevin was named the MAC Player of the Year and freshman Joey Piatczyc was named the MAC Freshman of the Year.
