WVU Welcomes No. 24 Texas for Senior Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s basketball team closes out its 2014-15 regular-season home slate on Sunday, March 1 versus No. 24-ranked Texas. Tipoff for Senior Day is set for 1 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. The contest will air nationally on ESPN2/WatchESPN.
WVU will recognize its three seniors - Averee Fields, Crystal Leary and Linda Stepney - prior to the game. Fans are encouraged to arrive by 12:40 p.m. in order to partake in the Senior Day ceremonies. Admission to Sunday’s contest is just $1 courtesy of United Bank. “It’s Senior Day,” said coach Mike Carey. “We want the seniors to go out on a good note. Hopefully, all three seniors will play very, very well. To me, it’s about the seniors this game. They’ve done a great job for West Virginia University. I am very proud of the three seniors.”
Sunday is Fan Appreciation Day. Small drinks and small popcorn are $1 each. Foam fingers, pom-poms and other promotional items will be available to fans while supplies last. At halftime, the Troy Pop Rocks Jump Rope Team presented by Coke Zero will perform.
Fans are invited to bring new or gently used teddy bears and other stuffed animals to toss on the court at the game. All donated items will be distributed by the City of Morgantown Police and Monongalia County Sherriff’s Office to child victims of crime and trauma.

West Virginia (16-12, 6-10 Big 12) is coming off a 73-63 loss at TCU on Tuesday. Junior guard Bria Holmes poured in a game-high 11 points in the defeat. Holmes’ 19.3 points per game are second in the Big 12.
The Mountaineers continue to be one of the nation’s most prolific shot blocking teams, averaging 6.7 blocks per game for fourth nationally. Lanay Montgomery’s 3.5 blocks per game lead the Big 12 and are 11th nationally.
The Mountaineers and Texas (19-8, 8-8) meet for the eighth time on Sunday. WVU holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series and is 2-0 against the Longhorns in Morgantown.
“I thought we played well against them in Austin,” said Carey. “We competed. Even though we lost that game, I was very pleased after the first game against Texas because I thought we played very, very hard.”
In the previous meeting on January 7, Texas led by as many as 14 before holding on for a 61-55 victory. Nneka Enemkpali led Texas with 11 points and 12 rebounds. WVU’s Holmes had a game-high 22 points.
Texas has won four straight games, with its most recent coming in a 59-42 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday. The Longhorns are second in the Big 12 in four categories: rebounding margin (+10.3), field goal defense (36.0 percent), scoring margin (+10.2), and three-point field goal defense (29.2 percent).
After Enemkpali’s season ended due to a knee injury, Longhorn Kelsey Lang has stepped in with a team-best 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Freshman Ariel Atkins also in in double figures with 10.4 points per contest. Brady Sanders is the Longhorns’ top assists distributor, handing out 3.3 per contest.

HOLMES JOINS ANOTHER CLUB

- Her 541 points this season is eighth all-time at WVU and is just two away from passing current graduate assistant Liz Repella (‘09).
- She is only the fourth player to have 500+ points in two different seasons at WVU.
- Holmes’ 19.32 scoring average sits eighth all-time in a single season.
