Track Finishes Day One at Big 12 Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track and field team completed the first day of the 2015 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Lied Recreation Athletic Facility in Ames, Iowa.
"Today was a strong day for us," said coach Sean Cleary. "We wanted to put 8-10 women on the All-BIg 12 team and had five do so on the first day. Each of those girls, as well as the DMR, surpassed their rankings coming into the meet while setting lifetime-bests indoors."
In the preliminaries of the women’s one mile, Kelly Williams placed fourth in her heat in 4:49.81. Williams finished eighth overall in the prelims to qualify for tomorrow’s final in the one mile scheduled for 3:10 p.m. ET.
Katlyn Shelar placed sixth overall in the pole vault finals on Friday evening. Shelar vaulted 3.94 meters to earn a spot on the podium at the league’s indoor championship for the second straight season. Tori Bertrand finished 14th with a 3.64 meters mark.
The 1,000-meter run preliminaries saw two Mountaineers qualify for tomorrow’s finals. Brianna Kerekes placed fourth in the 1,000 meters prelims in 2:51.77 and Amy Cashin placed seventh in 2:51.26. Each earned a qualification in tomorrow’s finals scheduled for 4:20 p.m. ET.
In the 5,000-meter run finals, Jillian Forsey led the way for the Mountaineers with a seventh-place finish in 16:25.43. Maggie Drazba placed ninth in 16:28.99 and Brynn Harshbarger finished 12th in 17:08.43.
The night was capped off with a sixth-place finish by the Mountaineer distance medley relay team of Kelly Williams, Christa D’Egidio, Brianna Kerekes and Amy Cashin. The group teamed up for a time of 11:35.51.
West Virginia sits in ninth place after one day of competition.
The Mountaineers return to the track tomorrow for the second and final day of the 2015 Big 12 Indoor Championship. The action will get underway at 11 a.m., ET.
