Baseball Travels to Myrtle Beach

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team continues its 17-game season-opening road trip this weekend with the annual trip to the Chanticleer Classic in Conway, South Carolina and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Mountaineers will play in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 27 against Kent State at noon and Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. Those games will be played at Springs Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina. West Virginia’s following two games will be against Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. and against Illinois on Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. Both of those games will be played at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Last weekend, the Mountaineers went 1-2 at Georgia Southern, including a 12-4 victory on Saturday. West Virginia now has an overall record of 3-3 after two weekends of action.
Senior third baseman Justin Fox continues to lead WVU for the season, batting at a .435 clip (10-for-23) with five runs, two doubles, one home run and two RBIs. Freshman outfielder Kyle Davis is second on the team with a .381 batting average, four runs, four doubles and three RBIs, while senior shortstop Taylor Munden and sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer have two home runs apiece. Munden has started the season with a six-game hitting streak.
Freshman right-hander BJ Myers (0-0) will start for the Mountaineers on Friday against Kent State. Myers allowed three runs on four hits with one strikeout and three walks in 4.0 innings for his second-straight no-decision last Friday at Georgia Southern.
Myers will be opposed by Kent State right-hander Nick Jensen-Clagg (1-1), who has a 3.60 ERA and 13 strikeouts in two starts. Kent State is led by outfielder Jacob Neuschaefer who has a .444 batting average, one double, one triple and six RBIs.
Senior left-hander Ross Vance (1-1) will start on Friday against Coastal Carolina. Vance was brilliant against Georgia Southern last Saturday, allowing three runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in 6.1 innings, picking up the win.
Coastal Carolina will counter with right-hander Alex Cunningham, who is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts this season. Infielder Connor Owings leads the Chanticleers with a .391 batting average, one doubles, two home runs runs and nine RBIs.
Freshman right-hander Adam Keller (0-1) will make his first career start against Ball State on Saturday. Keller has made two appearances in relief this season, giving up four runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
Ball State has yet to announce its rotation, but has four players batting over .400 for the season, led by infielder Elbert Devarie. Devarie is hitting .464 with two doubles, one home run and six RBIs.
Sunday’s start against Illinois will go to sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (1-1). For the season Donato has a 2.70 ERA with seven strikeouts in 10.0 innings.
Illinois will start right-hander John Kravetz, who is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two starts. First baseman David Kerian is hitting .500 with one double, one home run and five RBIs.
