Swimming & Diving Garners Academic Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were recognized by the Big 12 Conference and the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for their hard work and dedication in the classroom this past fall.
In total, 26 Mountaineers earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, as announced by the conference today.
Five West Virginia student-athletes were recognized by the league for maintaining 4.00 grade point average (GPA) - the most of any Big 12 institution. WVU’s Frank Csonka, Nathan Howells, David Palley, Haily VandePoel and Jenelle Zee all recorded 4.0 GPAs.
The women’s squad landed 14 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, which tied for the most among Big 12 schools. Morgan Emter, Kelsey Frantz, Jaimee Gillmore, Katherine King, Emma Luigard, Katie Murto, Julie Ogden, Courtney Parenti, Jennifer Rey, Meredith Rogers, Lindsay Schmidt, Emma Skelley, VandePoel and Zee were named to the first team, maintaining a 3.20 or better GPA.
Mackenzie Braden represented the Mountaineer women on the All-Big 12 Second Team, holding a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
For the WVU men, 11 student-athletes in total earned recognition, with seven claiming Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolades.
Csonka, Aidan Fumagalli, Howells, Jakob Iotte, Andrew Marsh and Palley landed spots on the first team, while Nathan Cobbe, Daeton Davenport, Austin Green and Miles Molinaro were named to the second team.
Also announced today, the West Virginia women earned the Fall 2014 CSCAA NCAA DI Women’s Team Academic Award. As a team, the Mountaineer women maintained a 3.29 GPA to earn the distinction.
