Staten Earns Big 12 Honors

IRIVING, Texas - Two student-athletes that led their teams to key victories are the latest recipients of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week. Juwan Staten of West Virginia wins player honors for the third time this year, while Iowa State’s Jameel McKay is recognized as top newcomer for the first time. Staten averaged 21.0 points and 5.5 assists as West Virginia won back-to-back regular season games against ranked opponents for just the fifth time in school history. The senior guard began the week with 20 points, including the game-winning layup with four seconds left in a win over No. 8 Kansas. He added 22 points and seven assists as the Mountaineers defeated No. 22 Oklahoma State for the first time since joining the Big 12. Staten shot 51.7 percent in the two contests, including 60.0 percent from 3-point range.

Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

McKay turned in a double-double effort for the Cyclones who won consecutive road games in Big 12 play for the first time since 2006. The junior forward recorded 10.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game with seven blocked shots. He started with a 17-point, 14-rebound performance at Oklahoma State, as ISU won in Stillwater for the second straight season. McKay was strong on the glass at Texas as well, grabbing nine rebounds to go along with three blocks and three points. The Cyclones are 4-1 since he entered the starting lineup and he has 41 blocked shots in just 17 games since becoming eligible in December.
