WVU Drops Series at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell 15-2 at Georgia Southern in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium.
West Virginia (3-3) finished with two runs on eight hits with three errors and Georgia Southern (5-2) scored 15 runs on 13 hits with one error.
Georgia Southern’s Aaron Mizell gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to right center field. Georgia Southern pushed its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second with the help of a West Virginia error as Spencer Duffie scored on a sacrifice fly.
Senior shortstop Taylor Munden put the Mountaineers on the board in the top of the third with his second home run in as many days. The solo shot over the left center field fence cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Eagles responded with two unearned runs, extending the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly and Duffie scored on a single by Kent Rollins followed by a throwing error.
The Mountaineers notched one run in the top of the sixth, bringing the score to 5-2, when sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer launched his second home run of the season, this one to right field.
Georgia Southern put the game out of reach at 10-2 in the bottom of the sixth with five runs on four hits. The frame was highlighted by a two-run triple to left center field by Rollins and an RBI double to left field by Kody Adams.
Rollins gave the Eagles a 13-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run home run to left field. Andrew Kelley then made it 15-2 with a two-run double to right center field.
Sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Nine different pitchers saw action in relief of Donato.
Connor Simmons (1-0) went 5.0 innings in the victory for Georgia Southern, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Rollins finished his day 3-for-4 and just a double shy of the cycle, while scoring two runs and driving in six. Adams, Mizell, Duffie and Will Hudgins had two hits apiece.
West Virginia returns to action next weekend at the Chanticleer Classic. The Mountaineers will play in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 27 against Kent State at noon and Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. Those games will be played at Springs Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina. West Virginia’s following two games will be against Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. and against Illinois on Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. Both of those games will be played at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
