Five Mountaineers Named Academic All-Big 12

Five West Virginia University women’s basketball student-athletes garnered Academic All-Big 12 honors, as announced by the league office on Thursday.

Averee Fields, Bria Holmes and Bre McDonald were all first team honorees, while Crystal Leary and Linda Stepney earned second team recognition.

Fields was one of two Big 12 student-athletes to be nominated with a 4.0 GPA. Fields is a social work major and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 team earlier this month. Holmes, an All-America candidate, is pursuing a degree in criminology. McDonald, a redshirt sophomore, is enrolled in communication studies.

Leary is expected to finish her degree in child development and family studies, while Stepney is also studying criminology.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. The honor is the third for Fields in her career and the second for Holmes. Leary, McDonald and Stepney were all first time honorees.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA or have averaged at least a 3.0 GPA in the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria with the exception of percentage of participation are also eligible.

West Virginia returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 21, versus Iowa State in the annual Play 4Kay pink game and Alumni Day. Tipoff with the Cyclones is set for Noon ET inside the WVU Coliseum.
