Two From Gymnastics Nationally Ranked

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two from the West Virginia University gymnastics team are nationally ranked in this week’s GymInfo Poll.
For the sixth straight week, sophomore Alexa Goldberg is ranked in the uneven bars. The Ivyland, Pennsylvania, native is up four spots to No. 20 this week with a 9.86 season average.
Senior Dayah Haley is up three spots to No. 45 (9.842 avg.) on floor this week; it is her second straight week in the poll.
As a team, the Mountaineers continue to rank on vault, and the squad checks in at No. 21 (48.971 avg.).
Oklahoma continues to rank No. 1 overall, as the Sooners boast a 197.536 average. Florida ranks No. 2 (197.325 avg.), and LSU is No. 3 (197.321 avg.). Utah (197.167 avg.) and Alabama (196.938 avg.) are No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Regionally, the Mountaineers maintain their No. 4 ranking in the Southeast with a 194.629 average. The squad is No. 4 on vault, No. 5 (48.833 avg.) on floor, No. 6 (48.429 avg.) on beam and No. 8 (48.396 avg.) on bars.
Haley owns the team’s top regional ranking and checks in at No. 4 on floor. Junior Melissa Idell follows at No. 14 (9.808 avg.), and freshman Jordan Gillette ranks No. 22 (9.775 avg.).
Goldberg is the lone Mountaineer in the bars rankings and sits at No. 6. She also ranks No. 18 (38.537 avg.) in the all-around, two spots behind sophomore Nicolette Swoboda at No. 16 (38.6 avg.).
Junior Jaida Lawrence paces the vault lineup and ranks No. 9 (9.846 avg.). Freshman Zaakira Muhammad ranks No. 15 (9.829 avg.), and Swoboda trails at No. 24 (9.8 avg.).
Senior Beth Deal leads a trio of Mountaineers on beam and ranks No. 11 (9.758 avg.). Idell (9.708 avg.) and Gillette (9.706 avg.) rank No. 22 and No. 23, respectively.
WVU continues to rank No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference. The squad ranks No. 2 on vault and floor, and No. 3 on bars and beam.
Goldberg owns the team’s top conference ranking and is No. 4 on bars. Swoboda ranks No. 4 in the all-around, with Goldberg following at No. 5.
Three Mountaineers are ranked on floor, with Haley leading the pack at No. 5. Idell sits at No. 7, and Gillette ranks No. 10.
Lawrence and Muhammad rank No. 8 and No. 9, respectively, on vault, while Deal and Idell rank No. 9 and No. 10, respectively, on beam.
WVU (6-6-1, 0-0-1) is coming off a 195.425-194.6 loss to then-No. 18 Denver on February 13, at the WVU Coliseum. Goldberg won her fourth bars title of the year with a season-high 9.875 score, while Haley took her third straight win on floor with a 9.875 mark.
The Mountaineers stay at the Coliseum and play host to No. 25 New Hampshire, Maryland and Rutgers in the third annual “Wendy M. Roach Invitational” on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. It’s a “Pink Meet” to promote breast cancer awareness, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink. The team will accept sundry item donations for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. Additionally, the first 500 fans will receive a pink rally towel, courtesy of WVU Healthcare.
