Stainbrook Named Athlete of the Week

With the Mountaineers trailing 16-15 entering the final match vs. Ohio on Sunday, Cory Stainbrook was thrust into a winner-takes-all situation and earned the triumph for himself and his team with an 8-0 major decision over Josh Parrett.
Stainbrook recorded an early takedown to lead 2-0 with more than 2:00 of riding time at close out the first period. Starting on top in the second, he rode Parrett out for entire period, bring his total up to more than 4:00 of ride time. Starting the third period in the defensive position, Stainbrook scored the reversal to lead 4-0 before adding a trio of nearfall points. He tacked on the riding time point to take the 8-0 major, his third of the season, and give the Mountaineers the 19-16 victory over the Bobcats.

No. 13/16 Michael Morales won a 16-0 tech. fall over Joel Shump to start things off at 141, while Bubba Scheffel grabbed a 3-1 decision over Andrew Romanchik at 184 as the Mountaineers trailed 13-8. A.J. Vizcarrondo got the comeback started at heavyweight with a 2-0 decision to make it 16-11, before No. 20 Zeke Moisey picked up a 17-8 major decision over Zak Hassan at 125 to bring WVU within one point, down 16-15. He is the team leader in takedowns with 49 and bonus-point victories with 14, boasting a 26-11 overall mark, and is tied for fifth for wins at 141 pounds ... Roach Invitational” on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. … it’s a “Pink Meet” to promote breast cancer awareness, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink … the team also will accept sundry item donations for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center … additionally, the first 500 fans will receive a pink rally towel, courtesy of WVU Healthcare.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU (6-6-1, 0-0-1) came up short against No. 18 Denver, losing 195.425-194.6, at the WVU Coliseum on February 13 … the Mountaineers had two individual wins, with sophomore Alexa Goldberg helping the team tally a season-high 48.675 on bars with a first place, 9.875 score, and senior Dayah Haley tying for the floor victory with a 9.875 mark … junior Jaida Lawrence finished second on vault with a 9.85 score, while freshman Jordan Gillette matched her beam career high of 9.775 and finished second … Goldberg also finished second in the all-around with a career-high 38.775.
