MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team notched two victories Sunday afternoon, as it defeated California (Pa.) and Eastern Michigan, without giving up a single match point, at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“Overall, we had a solid day. I thought the second match against Eastern Michigan was a solid match, and it was the most complete match we played this season,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac. “It showed in singles, and the way we finished off the matches at the end. In the end, I thought we played really well over a solid team.”
The Mountaineers (7-1) got off to a good start after the team earned its first point of the day in doubles play. The No. 3 freshmen duo Lyn Yuen Choo and Habiba Shaker cruised past CALU’s Katie Olson and Alice Johns (6-1). At the No. 1 spot, junior Hailey Barrett and senior Ikttesh Chahal only lost one game on their way to a 6-1 victory over CALU’s Jesse Burrell and Keifer Shaw.
In singles play, Shaker was the first one off the court after defeating CALU’s Veronika Mikulus at the No. 4 position (6-1, 6-1). Shortly after, Choo made quick work of her opponent Ramona Czakon at the No. 2 spot, as she earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Only needing one more point to win the match, freshman Yvon Martinez answered the call for the Mountaineers at the No. 6 slot. Martinez dropped her first set 3-6, but bounced back in dominate form as she took the last two sets from CALU’s Alice Johns (6-1, 6-1). Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were abandoned after the fourth match point was won.
In match two of the double header, the team earned a hard fought point in doubles action after they dropped its first match at the No. 3 slot. Shaker and Choo lost to EMU’s Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandro Barcel Almoyna (4-6). No. 1 Barrett and Chahal kept the Mountaineers alive as they defeated EMU’s Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska (7-5).
At the No. 2 position, freshman Carolina Lewis and sophomore Kaja Mrgole needed a win to lock up the first point of the match. They didn’t have an easy path though, as they fought off three match points to force a tiebreaker. The duo found their groove, as they came back to top EMU’s Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero (7-6 (4)).
Coming off the long doubles match, Lewis was the first one to make easy work of her opponent, as she sailed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot. Shaker also had a quick match at the No. 5 slot, as she did not allow EMU’s Ribero to win a game in the second set (6-3, 6-0).
On the other hand, No. 1 Mrgole and No. 4 Chahal did not have such easy roads to victory. Chahal captured the first set, but fell in the second. She was able to prevail in a third set tiebreaker, as she bested EMU’s Friedrichs (6-2, 2-6, 10-5). Mrgole lost her first set, but overcame EMU’s Supejova in the second, as she forced a third set tiebreaker to pull out the victory (4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-7).
Choo picked up another win at the No. 3 spot, as she topped Martinovska (6-2, 6-3). Barrett also secured a 7-5, 6-4 win, as she defeated EMU’s Gogvazde at the No. 2 position.
The 7-0 win over the Eagles propelled WVU to a 7-1 record to start the spring, already more than doubling their win total from last season.
The Mountaineers return to the court on Friday, Feb. 20, for a doubleheader against Wright State at 12 p.m., and UMBC at 4 p.m., at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
