Tennis Tallies Two Victories in Home Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team clinched two victories, Friday afternoon, as the team pushed its unbeaten streak to five matches, downing Youngstown State and Towson with scores of 6-1, at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“Overall, I thought it was a solid day of competition. We played okay in doubles in singles action, and different players contributed in different matches. It was a good team effort overall,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac.
The Mountaineers (5-1) swept Youngstown State in doubles play, led by senior Ikttesh Chahal and junior Hailey Barrett at the No. 1 position, as they best YSU’s Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova (6-3). At the No. 3 spot, freshmen tandem Lyn Yuen Choo and Habiba Shaker defeated YSU’s Victoria Ferry and Julianna Heino with a score of 6-3.
Leading 1-0 in team scoring, WVU recorded five more victories in singles play. Barrett defeated YSU’s Dominika Lackova in a three-set tiebreaker with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 at the No. 2 position. Freshman Carolina Lewis, Chahal and Shaker defeated the Penguins in straight sets to claim victories at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
WVU claimed the one point doubles advantage against the Towson Tigers early on, as Barrett and Chahal recorded their second victory of the day. The No. 1 tandem bested Towson’s Lucy Williams and Nicole Shakhnazarova with a score of 6-4. At the No. 3 spot, freshman Yvon Martinez and Shaker defeated Towson’s Sophie Lesage and Barbora Vasilkova (6-0).
In singles, the Mountaineers notched five more victories as the team tallied its second win of the day. At the No. 1 position, Kaja Mrgole bested Towson’s Sophie Lesage with a score of 6-3, 7-5. Choo recorded her first victory of the day with a second-set tiebreaker, as she defeated Towson’s Lucy Williams (6-4, 7-6 (4)).
At the No. 5 spot, Lewis recorded her fourth straight victory of the spring season. Martinez notched her first victory of the day, as she bested Towson’s Renda van Oorschodt in a three-set tiebreaker with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Shaker bested Towson’s A.J. Gomer in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
The Mountaineers return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 15, for another doubleheader against California (Pa.) at 9 a.m., and Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m., at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
