MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rowing coach Jimmy King has announced the 2015 rowing schedule.
“We’ll see five of the seven other Big 12 rowing programs over two regattas this season. Although we may not directly race all of those programs through the course of those regattas, we’ll get a good gauge of our relative speeds,” said coach Jimmy King. “Beyond our conference rivals we’ll face many top-tier programs throughout the season providing valuable and needed racing experience.”
The 2015 schedule features six regattas and a dual race in Morgantown on the Monongahela River. The Mountaineers will travel to Washington D.C. and Indiana, and will trek to New Jersey and Tennessee twice this season.
West Virginia opens the year at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from March 14-15, hosted by the University of Louisville.
WVU returns to the water on March 28, as they travel to Washington D.C., for a tri-meet against Georgetown and North Carolina.
For the second-consecutive year, the Mountaineers travel to Bloomington, Indiana, for a dual with Indiana University on April 4.
The Mountaineers travel to Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey, on April 11 and 12 for the Knecht Cup Regatta, which provides competition for nearly 70 schools from across the country each year.
Following the Knecht Cup Regatta, West Virginia returns to Morgantown to host a dual race with Duquesne on the Monongahela River on April 19.
“Hosting a home event is always a treat for us. The Mon River is a fantastic waterway providing a great venue for hosting small events such as our dual with Duquesne,” King stated. “Unlike most other sports at WVU, a home event occurs only once or twice a year for rowing, so it’s hard to not get excited about the opportunity to showcase our team to our local families and friends.”
On May 3, WVU competes in its final regular season regatta, as the squad travels to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, for the second time this year to compete at the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River.
Two weeks later, West Virginia will conclude its season, as the Mountaineers takes its second trip to Tennessee for the Big 12 Championship. The2015 season marks the fourth time the event has been recognized as a fully-supported conference championship. It will be hosted by the University of Tennessee at Melton Hill Lake, from May 16-17.
Affiliate members Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee will join Big 12 opponents Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia in the 2015 championship, with the winner claiming the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Rowing Championship.
“I’m excited about a spring season that we’re approaching with lots of unknowns. While that might be reason for worry in some years, we have a fairly young team in terms of experience,” King explained. “Our unknowns are exciting and full of opportunities to be seized in the weeks and months ahead.”
