Martin Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following her performance against Marshall, women’s basketball freshman Tynice Martin has been named the West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Martin led West Virginia with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Mountaineers’ 66-60 defeat of Marshall in the annual Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic in Charleston on Sunday.
Martin was 5-of-9 from the field and was perfect from behind the arch (1-of-1) and from the free throw line (4-of-4). The Atlanta native hit a critical three with four minutes remaining in the final quarter to push WVU’s lead to eight.
The 15 points and eight rebounds were season-highs for the freshman guard. Martin is averaging 8.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in nine games this season.
Women's Basketball:
This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia returns home to host Longwood in a 7 p.m. tilt on Wednesday, Dec. 16 … Wednesday night is the annual ‘Feed A Family’ food drive … any fan that brings a non-perishable food item for donation to the Blue Gate will receive a coupon for a hot dog at the next women’s basketball game (limit two per person) … after a battle with the Lancers, the Mountaineers open the Florida Sunshine Classic against James Madison on Sunday, Dec. 20, in a 5 p.m. tilt, on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida … the team concludes pre-holiday play against Indiana on Monday, Dec. 21, with a scheduled tip time of 7:15 p.m.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia collected its 11th consecutive victory over Marshall with a 66-60 win in the annual Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic on Sunday … the Mountaineers staved off a Herd comeback in the fourth quarter thanks to a layup from Teana Muldrow and a triple from freshman Tynice Martin … center Lanay Montgomery collected MVP honors once again after scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season … Martin netted season-highs with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Bria Holmes boasted a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 assists.
Notes: West Virginia is now 39-16 against Marshall all-time … the Mountaineers have reeled off 11 consecutive victories over the Herd … WVU has won five consecutive games this season … the Mountaineers’ field goal defense of 32.5 percent ranks eighth nationally … Bria Holmes paces WVU and ranks second in the Big 12 with 18.0 points per game … Lanay Montgomery’s 3.56 blocks per game leads the league and ranks in the NCAA’s top five … Montgomery’s 9.6 rebounds are third in the Big 12 … freshman Olivia Seggie ranks second in the league and in the top-10 nationally with a 4.43 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Coach Mike Carey after the win over Marshall: “We just don’t rebound real well right now. We haven’t all year. It’s something we have to do a lot better job, rebounding. We can’t just count on Lanay getting every rebound. We have to have other people rebounding.”
Wrestling:
This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers will break for the holidays before resuming action on Jan. 1-2 when they travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to compete in the Southern Scuffle.
Last Week in Wrestling: The No. 25 WVU wrestling team topped Lock Haven 30-3 at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday … nine of 10 Mountaineers won their bouts … No. 11/13 Zeke Moisey (125), Zachary Moore (149) and No. 11/13 Dylan Cottrell (157) each claimed a major decision … Tony DeAngelo (141) and A.J. Vizcarrondo (HWT) won bouts in overtime … Moore and Connor Flynn (165) each claimed their first official collegiate wins after starting their varsity careers last week in Las Vegas … WVU hosted its annual Cradles for Cancer even to honor those affected by breast cancer.
Notes: The Mountaineers rank at No. 25 in the most recent NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll … a trio of Mountaineers appear in the national rankings as well (FloWrestling/InterMat): Zeke Moisey is No. 11/13 at 125 pounds, Dylan Cottrell is 11/13 at 157 and Jacob A. Smith is 8/8 at 197 pounds … Cottrell earned his team-best sixth major decision with his 14-2 defeat of Lock Haven’s Aaron McKinney … Cottrell and Moisey are tied for the team lead with eight bonus-point victories … Cottrell also leads WVU with 29 team points in dual matches.
Swimming and Diving:
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams are idle this week ... The WVU divers will travel to Coral Springs, Florida, to compete at the Coral Springs Classic on Sunday, Jan. 3 ... the Mountaineer swimmers take a month break before they join the divers in hosting Pitt on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the WVU Natatorium.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers are idle this week ... West Virginia opens the 2015-16 regular season when the team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete at the Nittany Lion Challenge on Jan. 16.

Women's Tennis:
This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia resumes play in January for the dual meet portion of the season … the Mountaineers will kick off the spring season when they travel to Pitt to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m.

Notes: This fall, the Mountaineers competed in five tournaments … sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team with nine singles wins, followed by senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo with eight and seven victories this season, respectively … the doubles tandems of Barrett and Martinez, and Lewis and Choo, and junior Kaja Mrgole and Shaker are also tied for a team-best 4-3 doubles record this fall.
Coach Miha Lisac on the conclusion of the fall season: “We are working on the right things going into the spring season. Each and every player has improved, and we also improved as a team. We are not far off, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, there is more work to be done, but we can see that we are capable of playing well and can capitalize on points when given the opportunity.”
Rowing:
This Week in Rowing: The West Virginia University rowing team is idle until the start of its spring season.

Notes: The rowing novice team swept Duquesne, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon to conclude the fall season on Saturday, Nov. 7, on the Allegheny River … the novice 8 ‘A’ boat raced to a first-place finish with a time of 11:11.86, five seconds ahead of Pitt … the Novice 8 ‘B’ boat also won, finishing in front of Pitt with a time of 10:37.8 on a course approximately 200 meters shorter than the first novice 8 competition … in the last two races of the day, West Virginia finished first with a time of 11:40.8 in the Novice 4 ‘A’ race, followed by another first-place finish in the Novice 4 ‘B’ race … the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Oct. 31, was the first regatta of the season for the novice team … eight of the Mountaineers’ 10 boats posted top-10 finishes on the Occoquan Reservoir … WVU’s four medals came with first-and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+, a bronze-medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 and a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Championship 4+ … the WVU rowing team also had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 3 … the Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8 … to open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8, as it faced 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.
Golf:
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers will take a winter hiatus and return to the course on Feb. 15, when they travel to Houston, Texas, for the President’s Day Challenge … the event will be hosted by Rice.
