WVU Sweeps Singles on Day Two of Akron Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team swept the University of Missouri-Kansas City in singles action on the second day of the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, on Saturday.
“We made some progress today, and it felt good to take those steps forward as a team,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Tomorrow is another opportunity for us to get better.”
In the morning session, West Virginia tallied six singles victories against UMKC.
Senior Hailey Barrett bested UMKC’s Melinda Johnson in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Habiba Shaker came out on top in a three-set battle against UMKC’s Raquel Argenal. Shaker dropped the first set, but bounced back in the final two sets to claim the victory by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4).
Junior Kaja Mrgole (6-2, 6-4), and sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo (6-0, 6-2) and Carolina Lewis (6-0, 6-0) cruised past UMKC opponents in straight set victories.
Sophomore Yvon Martinez prevailed in a three-set match against UMKC’s Linda Ammar Mouhoub. Martinez lost the first set, but did not give up a single game in the final two sets to win the match by a score of 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (6).
In doubles action, West Virginia won one of three matches against Cornell. Lewis and Choo cruised past Cornell’s Mariko Iinuma and Priyanka Shah, only giving up one game (6-1).
The Akron Invitational concludes on Sunday, Oct. 4, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Mountaineers face UMKC in doubles action, at noon, followed by singles play against host Akron, at 1 p.m.
