Marsh Named Student-Athlete of the Week

Marsh led the Mountaineers with seven first-place finishes at the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend to help the men’s team defeat Seton Hall and Xavier at the two-day event at the WVU Natatorium. The Bemus Point, New York, native won every race he was entered in by a margin of 1.4 seconds or more. Marsh competed in seven of the 18 events.
In the men’s 200-yard medley relay, Marsh opened the relay with a time of 22.51 in the 50 backstroke, the fastest individual backstroke time out of the six teams by over two seconds. Marsh won the 200 freestyle in 1:39.28 to record a win by nearly four seconds. The 200 freestyle relay saw a WVU victory, in 1:23.73, as Marsh touched the wall in 20.91, the fastest time by 0.58 seconds.
In the 100 butterfly, Marsh won his fourth race of the day with a time of 49.39, a victory by 1.72 seconds. His fifth win came in the 100 backstroke, where he raced to a 48.45 finish to capture the victory by 1.67 seconds.
His final individual victory came in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.58. Marsh stayed a perfect seven-for-seven, as he helped the men’s 400-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 3:24.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 2/3 Mountaineers close their regular-season slate at Baylor on Friday, Oct. 30, with first kick from Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field set for 8 p.m. ET … the Bears currently sit in second place behind WVU in the Big 12 Conference standings … should BU win at TCU on Oct. 27, the Bears will play for a share of the conference championship Friday night … should they draw or lose at TCU, then WVU is the outright Big 12 champion.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU clinched its fourth straight Big 12 Conference regular-season title with a 2-1 overtime win at Oklahoma State on Oct. 23 … after 65 minutes of scoreless play, sophomore midfielder Carla Portillo put WVU ahead 1-0 with goal in the 66th minute … midfielder Ashley Lawrence assisted on the score, as she slid near the team bench to save possession before sending a strong cross into the box … OSU answered five minutes later with a goal from Niki McKnight … senior Kailey Utley tallied her third game winner in as many games with a goal in the 94th minute, receiving a ball from Lawrence before beating two OSU defenders en route to the penalty-kick line, where she then beat Cowgirl goalkeeper Michela Ongaro with a sure shot … WVU finished with a 16-8 shot advantage … Hannah Steadman made one save in the win … each squad earned three corner kicks.
Notes: WVU has now won six Big 12 titles in four years … the Mountaineers are the first team to win four straight Big 12 regular-season titles since Texas A&M (2004-07) … WVU was picked to win the Big 12 title by the conference coaches in the 2015 preseason poll … dating back to its days in the Big East Conference, WVU has won five straight conference regular-season titles, and nine since 2002 … Utley’s game winner was her Big 12-best sixth of the season … Lawrence’s two-assist night was her first of the season and the fourth of her career … she paces with a team-best seven helpers … WVU is now 5-0 against the Cowgirls.
This Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers return home for the last three regular-season games of the season … the homestand begins against No. 5 Akron on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in a Mid-American Conference showdown … Akron will be WVU’s highest-ranked opponent of the season … the Mountaineers own a 4-1 mark against top-six teams since 2006, Marlon LeBlanc’s first season as head coach.
Last Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU suffered a 3-2, double-overtime loss at Princeton on Oct. 20 before a 2-0 loss at Bowling Green on Oct. 24 … at Princeton, senior Ryan Cain netted a goal on a penalty kick in the 10th minute, and junior Mike Desiderio scored in the 86th minute, but each time Princeton answered, in the 20th minute and then 19 seconds after Desiderio gave WVU a 2-1 lead … the Tigers scored the winner with two minutes left in the second overtime … freshman Alec Boerner made a career-best 11 saves … on Saturday, Oct. 23, the Mountaineers dropped a 2-0 match at Bowling Green … West Virginia allowed two goals in the final 20 minutes, as Bowling Green scored in the 71st minute and 77th minute … WVU recorded 12 shots in the match, with four on goal.
This Week in Volleyball: WVU will play just one match this week … the Mountaineers will host Kansas State on Wednesday at the WVU Coliseum … the match is slated for a 6 p.m. start … players will don pink jerseys in honor of their annual Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness … Dig Pink was originally scheduled for Saturday vs. Oklahoma, but that game has been rescheduled to Nov. 24 in Norman.
Last Week in Volleyball: Due to an unexpected cancelation of their match against Oklahoma, the Mountaineers were limited to just one match this week … they traveled to Ames, Iowa, on Wednesday where they suffered a 3-0 loss to Iowa State, at Hilton Coliseum … sophomore outside hitter Morgan Montgomery had a team-best 10 kills in the loss, and she continues to lead the WVU offense … Haley Roe has stepped in at setter and assisted on 23 of WVU’s 28 kills … Roe also led the team with six digs.
Notes: Morgan Montgomery continues to rank near the top of the Big 12 … the sophomore outside hitter is third in the league with 3.78 kills per set and is also third in points at 4.21 points per set … libero Gianna Gotterba ranks sixth in digs with 3.51 per set … middle blocker Hannah Shreve averages 1.10 blocks per set to rank sixth in the Big 12.
Coach Reed Sunahara after the match at Iowa State: “I thought we had some good moments. We have to play a lot more consistent to string more points together. If we can do that, then we’re going to be in the game. I thought the energy level was better in the third set. Hopefully, we can build on that and carry it over into the next couple of days and be ready for Oklahoma.”
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers cap the fall season at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate, hosted by McNeese State … the event will be played at the Quail Valley Golf and River Club in Vero Beach, Florida, which is a par-72, 7,350-yard course … Easton Renwick, Max Sear, Cole Hand, Mason Short and Chris Williams will represent WVU at the event.
Last Week in Golf: WVU hosted its first ever home in tournament, welcoming 13 other programs to the Mountaineer Intercollegiate at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … Easton Renwick and Max Sear tied for 10th place overall each shooting 148 to finish four over par … Chris Williams tied for 37th with a score of 153 for nine over par … the Mountaineers finished in 11th place … Penn State took home the inaugural team trophy while Cincinnati’s Davis Baxter was the medalist.
Notes: Easton Renwick and Max Sear have combined for four top-10 finishes this season … Renwick and Alan Cooke have tied for the low round this season, each shooting a 67 … Renwick also holds the team’s lowest three-round score of the season with a 208 at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
Coach Sean Covich: “Max and Easton have combined for six Top 20 individual finishes in six events. They have certainly played at a high level this year so far. We have a new lineup yet again and I’m excited to see what Mason and Cole can bring to this event. Chris, Easton and Mason all played this golf course back in March so hopefully that familiarity with the course will help. We will be challenged once again as this will be a strong field on a great golf course.”
This Week in Cross Country: After a week offfrom competition, the Mountaineers will travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to compete at the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. … this will be the Cowboys’ third time hosting the 6k event on the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course.
Last Week in Cross Country:The Mountaineers had a week off from competition.
Notes: The team took second for the second consecutive season at the 2014 Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kansas … eight Mountaineers finished in the top 25, while three of them were freshmen … also WVU had runners earn Big 12 All-Conference honors for finishing in the top 15 overall … former runner Kaitlyn Gillespie finished fifth in 20:18.1, sophomore Maggie Drazba finished eighth (20:40.1) and junior Jillian Forsey in 12th (20:54.9).
This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia resumes play in January for the dual meet portion of the season … the Mountaineers will kick off the spring season when the team travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m.
Last Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia concluded its fall season at the WVU Martha Thorn Invitational this past weekend (Oct. 23-24) … during the two-day event, the Mountaineers squared off against James Madison and Duquesne in singles and doubles play … West Virginia recorded three singles and three doubles victories against JMU, and six singles matches and three doubles matches against Duquesne … in singles play, senior Hailey Barrett went three-for-four on the weekend, and captured two matches in straight set victories.
Notes: This fall, the Mountaineers competed in five tournaments … sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team with nine singles wins, followed by senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo with eight victories this season … the doubles tandems of Barrett and Martinez, and Lewis and Choo are also tied for a team-best 4-3 doubles record this fall.
Coach Miha Lisac on the conclusion of the fall season: “We are working on the right things going into the spring season. Each and every player has improved, and we also improved as a team. We are not far off, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, there is more work to be done, but we can see that we are capable of playing well and can capitalize on points when given the opportunity.”
This Week in Rowing: Following a month off from competition, the Mountaineers travel to Fairfax Station, Virginia, for the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Oct. 31 … the Head of the Occoquan is the first regatta of the season for the novice team.
Last Week in Rowing: The WVU rowing squad was idle last week.
Notes: The WVU rowing team had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 3 … the Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8+ … to open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8+, as it faced 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers have four weeks off from competition to prepare for the three-day Tennessee Invite, in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Nov. 20-22 … the meet will begin at 8 a.m. each day.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia rolled to wins over Xavier, Seton Hall and Butler in the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Oct. 23-24 … WVU won 38 of the 40 events in the event held at the WVU Natatorium, highlighted by a perfect sweep of every event by the women … senior Andrew Marsh posted seven wins for the WVU men, while senior Jaimee Gillmore led the women with victories in all six races she competed in … the WVU men went 2-0, with wins over Xavier (251-108) and Seton Hall (266-93), while the women went 3-0 with wins over Xavier (266-93), Seton Hall (275-88) and Butler (284-75).
Notes: Both WVU’s men and women’s swimming and diving squads dominated Butler (women), Seton Hall and Xavier at the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 … West Virginia won with a combined team score of 571 against Xavier’s 201, and a combined team victory of 541-181 against Seton Hall … the WVU women’s squad defeated Butler, 284-75 … the Mountaineers totaled 38 victories out of the 48 events.
Coach Vic Riggs following the Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend: “I think we finished the third session extremely well, both with our times and race strategies. If we can finish these types of meets in a day and a half, it should help us finish championship meets better, because we will have full three days with proper breaks in between events. Now, we have a month off to learn from the first month of competition in order to prepare ourselves for Tennessee.”
This Week in Rifle: Following a two-week hiatus, the No. 1-ranked Mountaineers will hit the road for a pair of Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) matches at No. 9 Memphis on Saturday, Oct. 31, before traveling to Oxford, Mississippi, for a match at No. 13 Mississippi on Sunday, Nov. 1 ... both matches are slated to begin at 8 a.m. ET ... West Virginia holds an 8-2 series record against Memphis and a 9-3 series record with Mississippi.
Last Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers were idle last week.
Notes: WVU opened its 2015-16 season with two matches on the road at Air Force’s Falcon Rifle Range in Colorado Springs, Colorado ... the Mountaineers defeated No. 9 Air Force (4705-4680), on Oct. 10, in both disciplines, outshooting the Falcons in smallbore, 2335-2322, and air rifle, 2370-2358 ... with the win, WVU improved to 18-0 against Air Force .... West Virginia then faced No. 6 Nebraska, on Oct. 11, earning its first Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) victory of the season by a score of 4714-4654 ... the Mountaineers defeated the Huskers in both guns, winning smallbore, 2338-2290, and air rifle, 2376-2364 ... junior Jean-Pierre Lucas shot a career-high 592 air rifle score against the Flacons ... senior Michael Bamsey matched his career-high smallbore score of 587 (198 kneeling, 199 prone, 192 standing) for the discipline win.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers open the women’s basketball preseason with the fourth annual Haunted Hoops game presented by Coke Zero on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum … West Virginia plays Shepherd in an exhibition contest … Trunk or Treat, sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Engineers, begins at 5 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum parking lot … tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and admission for Saturday’s contest is free.
Last Season in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers completed the 2014-15 season with a 23-15 overall record and a 7-11 mark in Big 12 Conference play … West Virginia reached the WNIT Finals before falling, 62-60, to UCLA in front of 8,658 Mountaineer fans at the Charleston Civic Center … West Virginia recorded a program-record 19 victories at home and also tied for the nation’s lead … Bria Holmes was tabbed a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection for a second year … Holmes was also named WBCA All-America Honorable Mention … Holmes, who set WVU’s junior scoring record with 716 points, later participated in the USA Basketball Pan American Games and World University Games team trials … senior Averee Fields boasted double figures with 13.8 points per game … Lanay Montgomery’s 124 blocks set a sophomore school record and led the Big 12 Conference last season.
Notes: West Virginia welcomes 11 newcomers, including eight freshmen, for the 2015 -16 season ... the Mountaineers are the sixth youngest team in the country by scholarship percentage (67%) … Bria Holmes was tabbed to the 2015 Preseason All-Big 12 team … this year’s co-captains are Holmes and Lanay Montgomery … WVU participates in two non-conference tournaments this year including the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge in Spokane, Washington, and Uncasville, Connecticut (Nov. 22-29) ... the Mountaineers also participate in the Florida Sunshine Classic (Dec. 20-21) at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida … there are 10 Mountaineer opponents that reached the 2014-15 postseason.
