MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team tallied six singles victories and three doubles wins at the WVU Martha Thorn Invitational, on Friday.
In the morning session, West Virginia battled James Madison in four singles matches and two doubles matches. The Mountaineers won two singles and one doubles match against JMU.
On the first singles court, senior Hailey Barrett defeated JMU’s Timea Guibe in a three-set battle to claim the victory. Barrett captured the first set, but fell in the second. She prevailed in a three-set tiebreaker to claim the match by a score of 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.
On court two, junior Kaja Mrgole cruised past JMU’s Rachel Nelson in a straight set victory by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles action against JMU, the sophomore tandem of Habiba Shaker and Carolina Lewis bested JMU’s Timea Guibe and Bella Highdenrick by a score of 6-4 on court one.
In the afternoon session, West Virginia squared off against Duquesne in four singles matches and four doubles matches. The Mountaineers went a perfect four-for-four in singles play, and claimed two of four doubles matches.
“I thought we saw more positive stuff in the afternoon session, and hopefully, we are able to be more consistent later on down the road,” said WVU women’s tennis coach Miha Lisac. “Overall, today was another learning experience.”
In singles action against Duquesne, Mrgole claimed her second victory of the day, when she defeated Ally Miller in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo also won in straight sets, defeating Sarah Shashura by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Yvon Martinez battled Duquesne’s Sara Mitrovic in a three-set match. Martinez did not give up a game against Mitrovic in the first set. She dropped the second set, but bounced back in the third set to claim the victory by a score of 6-0, 2-6, 7-6.
Barrett recorded a perfect 2-0 singles record on the day. In the afternoon session, Barrett bested Megan Wasson in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) to capture the victory.
In doubles play, the freshmen duo Abby Rosiello and Kirsten White defeated Duquesne’s Taylor Levinson and Koralie Etienne to claim its first match of the day by a score of 6-2.
Shaker and Lewis also won two of three doubles matches on the first day of the tournament, as the pair did not give up a single game against Duquesne’s Zuzanna Stelmaszak and Tyra Abdalla to capture to the match by a score of 6-0.
The Mountaineers will conclude its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Ridgeview Racquet Club. The Mountaineers face James Madison in four singles matches and two doubles matches, followed by four singles matches and two doubles matches against Duquesne in the afternoon session.
“Going into another day of matches tomorrow, we know what to expect,” Lisac noted. “We know what we need to work on, and we know what we need to accomplish.
“It’s another opportunity for us to go out there and get things done. It’s our last tournament of the fall semester, and I hope we are able to rise up to the occasion and take advantage of the opportunities that are presented.”
The Mountaineers will also honor former West Virginia coach Martha Thorn on her accomplishments as head coach at WVU on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Named the Mountaineers’ first head coach in 1974, coach Thorn led WVU to a 315-227-1 record. In 27 years, Thorn has coached 11 All-Atlantic 10 players, five Atlantic 10 All-Tournament players, three Freshman of the Year honorees and one Senior of the Year.
Thorn was named Coach of the Year in 1991. In that same year, Thorn led WVU to the Atlantic 10 Championship match, finishing the 1991 season with a 16-6 record.
