MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team finished day two at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Friday.
Today’s action consisted of one main singles round and two rounds in the main doubles draw.
In the main singles draw, sophomore Habiba Shaker suffered her first loss of the fall season, dropping a straight set match against Virginia Tech’s No. 44 Francesca Fusinato (6-4, 6-4). Shaker will compete against Norfolk State’s Dajana Cvjetkovic in the consolation bracket on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11:15 a.m.
Senior Hailey Barrett also dropped a three-set battle to Virginia Tech’s Kelly Williford in the main singles draw. She claimed the first set, but Williford only gave up one game in the second set. Tied at one-all, Barrett could not overcome the odds and fell to Williford in three sets by a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Barrett will square off against Pitt’s Callie Fray in the consolation bracket on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11:15 a.m.
“I thought Hailey and Habiba played solid matches today,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “They showed some good things in the way they competed out there, and hopefully, they will continue that in tomorrow’s play.”
In doubles action, the tandem of junior Kaja Mrgole and Shaker fell to Virginia’s Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelly in the round of 32 by a score of 8-2. Sophomores Carolina Lewis and Lyn Yuen Choo also fell in a hard fought battle to Virginia’s Maci Epstein and Victoria Olivarez (8-4).
