MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University doubles tandems of junior Kaja Mrgole and sophomore Habiba Shaker, and classmates Carolina Lewis and Lyn Yuen Choo advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Thursday.
“We played better in today’s doubles matches than in previous tournaments,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “I think they are starting to improve their doubles game overall, and we saw some progress in today’s matches. I thought they were aggressive, and they played good matches today.”
Today’s action consisted of one main draw doubles round and two qualifying singles rounds.
In the main doubles draw, Mrgole and Shaker defeated Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina and Caroline Williams in a hard fought match by a score of 8-7 (2). The duo will face Virginia’s Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelly on Friday, Oct. 16, at 1:30 p.m.

In the first round of the tournament, Mrgole bested Marshall’s Marija Bogicevic in a three-set battle. Mrgole claimed the first set, but dropped the second. She prevailed in set three, only giving up three games, to claim the match be a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Lewis also came out on top in the round of 32, defeating Radford’s Meili Martin (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) to advance to the next round of the tournament.
In the round of 16, Mrgole squared off against George Washington’s Marie-Louise Decamps, but fell in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Lewis faced Maryland’s Cassandre Thebault in another three-set battle. She claimed the first set, but Thebault did not give up a game to capture the second set of the match. Tied at one-all, Lewis could not overcome the odds and fell to Thebault by a score of 6-7, 6-0, 7-5.
In the main singles draw, Barrett and Shaker will compete in the first round on Friday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 a.m. Barrett will face Old Dominion’s Ingrid Vojcinakova, as Shaker squares off against Virginia Tech’s Francesca Fusinato.
“There has been some progress throughout the fall semester, especially in today’s matches, but I want to see more progress overall,” Lisac noted. “We have to learn how to execute our play in both singles and doubles action.”
