WVU Readies for ITA Atlantic Regional

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a week off from competition, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team readies for the ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg, Virginia, from Oct. 15-19. Liberty will host 34 teams in the five-day event.
The tournament begins on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 a.m. and concludes on Monday, Oct. 19, with the singles finals at 9:30 a.m. and doubles finals at 11:30 a.m. The Mountaineers will have six players compete for West Virginia in the upcoming draws.
“This weekend provides us with another opportunity to get better,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Our strategy has not changed for this tournament, and we will continue to improve in singles and doubles play. This tournament is no different than any other tournament we have competed in thus far.”
In singles play, sophomore Carolina Lewis faces Marshall’s Marija Bogicevic in the first round of the qualifying singles bracket on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 a.m. Sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo also competes against Virginia’s Victoria Olivarez, and junior Kaja Mrgole battles Virginia Tech’s Katherine Butler in the first round of the qualifying singles.
Senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Habiba Shaker will compete in the first round of the main draw on Friday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 a.m. Barrett will face Old Dominion’s Ingrid Vojcinakova, as Shaker squares off against Virginia Tech’s Francesca Fusinato.
West Virginia will also send a pair of doubles squads to the tournament. The doubles tandems of sophomore Yvon Martinez and Barrett, and Mrgole and Shaker competes in the first round of the doubles draw on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 1:30 p.m. Martinez and Barrett will face Hampton’s Cherise Slocombe and Kristina Titova, as Mrgole and Shaker squares off against Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina and Caroline Williams.
Shaker enters the weekend with a team-best 8-0 singles record this fall season. Choo went 2-1 in singles action at the Akron Invitational, on Oct. 2-4, to follow Shaker with a 7-2 singles record. Barrett and Martinez holds a team-high 4-2 doubles record this fall season.
