Rifle Wins Round One at Alaska

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team defeated No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks, 4691-4688, today, at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in Fairbanks, Alaska.
WVU (10-0, 7-0 GARC) fell short in the smallbore discipline for the first time this season, 2326-2314. The Mountaineers came back strong after the smallbore loss to win air rifle, outshooting the Nanooks 2377-2362.
Senior Thomas Kyanko led the team in smallbore, placing first in the discipline with a 586 mark. Freshman Elizabeth Gratz followed with 581, while sophomore Jean-Pierre Lucas shot 578.
Junior Michael Bamsey (574), Gratz, senior Ziva Dvorsak (579), Lucas and junior Garrett Spurgeon (576) completed the Mountaineer counting squad.
Alaska-Fairbanks’s Tim Sherry and Matt Eriksson tied for second in smallbore with 583, while Ryan Anderson shot 582 for fourth.
Dvorsak and Spurgeon tied for first in air rifle with 597, a career high for Spurgeon and just one short of Dvorsak’s. Junior Patrick Sunderman tied for third with UAF’s Tim Sherry with a career-high 596 mark, while senior Maren Prediger scored 595 for fifth place. Gratz shot 592, while Lucas shot 591, one short of his career high.
Dvorsak, Bamsey (589), Gratz, Lucas and Spurgeon made up the air rifle counting squad.
Today’s win pushes the team’s record against the Nanooks to 10-6 all time.
The Mountaineers will shoot another match against No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks tomorrow at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
