Tennis Tallies First Win Over Toledo

Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team tallied its first victory of the spring, downing the Rockets, 5-2, at the Shadow Valley at Central Tennis Center, in Toledo, Saturday evening.
“It feels good, and I am very happy for the players. They work hard and are constantly making progress,” said coach Miha Lisac. “We bounced back in singles today, and we are always learning new things in order to get better.”
The Mountaineers (1-1) found themselves in a familiar position today, as they surrendered the doubles points early on in the match. However, junior Hailey Barrett and freshman Habiba Shaker clinched their first doubles victory of the season at the No.2 spot, as they bested Toledo’s Lexy Pitt and Emily Mazzola with a score of 6-3.
WVU recorded five victories in singles action, as three freshmen tallied their first career wins this spring. At the No. 3 position, freshman Lyn Yuen Choo bested Toledo’s Mackenzie Bowman in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Yvon Martinez claimed the first set over Toledo’s Emily Mazzola in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5), and then claimed the victory in set two with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-3. Shaker also defeated Toledo’s Katelyn Nguyen for her first win of the season (6-4, 6-1).

At the No. 1 position, Kaja Mrgole claimed her first victory as well, as she defeated Toledo’s Pia Rygh with a score of 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 2 position, Barrett claimed the first set, but fell in a three set battle over Toledo’s Lexy Pitt with a score of 0-4, 6-3, 14-12.
“It is our goal to make progress as a team and be able to put ourselves in position to be successful in matches,” Lisac said. “It is our overall goal this year to get the program off the ground, and I believe we are heading in the right direction.”
The Mountaineers travel to New York for a dual match against Buffalo on Friday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. West Virginia remains in New York, as they travel to Niagara on Saturday, Feb. 7, to compete against the Purple Eagles. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
