MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia women’s basketball wraps up a two-game road trip with a visit to Texas Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.
Jeff Culhane and Meg Bulger will call the action on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Fans can listen to affiliates across the state of West Virginia, online at WVUsports.com or by using the TuneIn Radio app. A live video stream will also be available for a fee at TexasTech.com.
The Mountaineers (12-7, 2-5 Big 12) are coming off a 65-59 loss at Kansas on Saturday. Despite having a halftime lead, WVU couldn’t maintain the momentum as the Jayhawks snapped a two-game winning streak. Bria Holmes paced WVU with 16 points, while Averee Fields and Jessica Morton each added 10 points.
“I’ve said all along, you’ve got to have five that are on the floor playing defense, getting to the ball and getting up the lanes,” said coach Mike Carey. “When you have one or two that’s not doing that, it hurts your entire defense.”
Holmes sits second in the Big 12 with an average of 20.2 points per game. Fields follows with 14.7 points, which is fifth in the league. In just four games this season, Morton is boasting 10.3 points per contest.
Lanay Montgomery continues to be a force inside. She is tops in the league and sixth nationally with 3.8 blocks per contest. Montgomery has grabbed an average of 9.0 rebounds per game in league action.
WVU and Texas Tech close out the regular-season series on Wednesday. The Lady Raiders (12-7, 2-5 Big 12) have lost their last three games after winning 55-45 over the Mountaineers in Morgantown on Jan. 14. Most recently, Texas Tech fell 70-64 at Oklahoma on Saturday.
In that previous meeting, TTU held West Virginia to season lows in points (45) and field goal percentage (30.9). Amber Battle led the Lady Raiders with a game-high 20 points. Battle leads Texas Tech with 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 13 games this season.
The Mountaineers return home for Superhero Day against Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 1. Fans are encouraged to dress like their favorite superhero. Admission is just $1 courtesy of United Bank and the first 1,500 kids will receive a free superhero mask from Coke Zero. Heroes 4 Higher will provide the halftime entertainment.
