Goldberg Named VSR Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Following her winning performance on the uneven bars in the Mountaineers’ January 25 home opener, sophomore gymnast Alexa Goldberg has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Ivyland, Pennsylvania, native won her second bars title in three weeks with a 9.85 performance against No. 23 Iowa State and No. 25 George Washington. Goldberg, ranked No. 20 nationally on the event, has not scored below 9.85 all season. Her win Sunday was the seventh event win of her career; all victories have come on bars.
Goldberg also tallied a season-high 9.775 on floor, good enough for a share of sixth place. Her mark helped push the Mountaineers to a season-best 48.95 team score and ensure a tie with the Cyclones. Additionally, she made her career vault debut and earned a 9.6 score.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers will have another short week, traveling to Huntington, West Virginia for the Thundering Herd Open ... the two-day event begins Friday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m.
Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia competed at the YSU College Invitational on Friday, Jan. 23 ... in her first action of the season junior Marsielle McBeam took first in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters.
Notes & Quotes: McBeam’s jump of 1.70 meters was her best mark since the 2014 Big 12 Outdoor Championships ... for the second time in six days, Katlyn Shelar claimed first in the pole vault ... Shelar’s vault of 3.90 meters was her second-best mark of the season ... Renee Maisonneuve crossed the line in first in the one mile, recording a career-best 5:04.03 ... freshman Shamoya McNeil took second overall in the triple jump, jumping her second-best mark as a Mountaineer (11.25 meters).
This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia closes out its two-game road trip with a visit to Texas Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Tipoff in Lubbock is set for 8 p.m. ET. WVU returns home to host Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 1 for Superhero Day at 2 p.m. ET. Admission for that game is just $1. The first 1,500 kids in attendance will receive a free superhero mask courtesy of Coke Zero.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: WVU (12-7, 2-5 Big 12) went 1-1 on the week. The Mountaineers rallied from a halftime deficit to topple Kansas State, 63-51, at the Coliseum on Wednesday. WVU fell 65-59 to Kansas on Saturday.
Notes and Quotes: In just her third game at WVU, junior Jessica Morton tallied a game-high 22 points in the Mountaineers’ win over K-State. Morton is boasting 10.3 points in four games played. Center Lanay Montgomery’s nine blocks versus K-State were the most for a Mountaineer since Georgeann Wells in 1985. For the first time this season, WVU rallied from a halftime deficit to best K-State on Wednesday. In contrast, the Mountaineers lost for the first time this season when leading at the half. Bria Holmes paces the Mountaineers with 20.2 points per game, which ranks second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally. Montgomery’s 3.9 blocks per game is sixth nationally, while WVU’s 6.9 blocks as a team is fourth in the NCAA. Linda Stepney’s assist/turnover ratio of 3.19 sits fifth in the NCAA.
Coach Mike Carey: “Some of our players weren’t focused. We should’ve had a bigger lead at halftime. In the second half, when Kansas)started making their run, we made a lot of mistakes defensively and offensively.”
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers travel to Ohio State for its first dual match of the season on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 9 a.m. … West Virginia remains in Ohio, as they travel to Toledo on Saturday, Jan. 31, to compete against the Rockets, at 3 p.m.

Notes and Quotes: West Virginia is 0-15 all-time against the Buckeyes, and 6-1 all-time against the Rockets … the Buckeyes were ranked No. 33 in the opening poll released by the ITA on Jan. 6 … Ohio State’s doubles tandem of Gabrielle De Santis and Sandy Niehaus were ranked No. 26 in the Women’s Doubles Opening ITA Poll … OSU’s freshman Olivia Sneed led the Buckeyes with a singles ranking of No. 71, and freshman Anna Sanford was ranked No. 86 in the Women’s Singles Opening ITA Poll … the Mountaineers opened their 2015 season with a combined 13-5 overall record at the Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational (Jan. 16-18).
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The squads will remain split this week with the men traveling to Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 30, and the women hosting Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: The women narrowly fell in a dual meet to Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 24, by a score of 157-143 ... the men were idle last week.
Notes & Quotes: Haily VandePoel earned a sweep on the women’s 1- and 3-meter boards. VandePoel recorded a mark of 305.25 on the 3-meter board and scored 276.08 on the 1-meter board to claim first in both events ... West Virginia grabbed first, second and third in the women’s 100-butterfly ... Julie Ogden led the way in first place in 56.99, while Celia Martinez and Natalie Johnsen tied for second in 57.60 ... Emma Skelley swept the women’s 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. The 1,000 free saw Skelley finish first in 10:16.32 while the 500 free saw her race to first in 5:03.35 ... Jenelle Zee just missed out on a sweep of her own, earning first in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.36 and second in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.68 ... in the women’s 100-yard backstroke, Amelie Currat hit the pad first in 57.34. Currat also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.35.
Coach Vic Riggs: “I’m really proud of these ladies. It was a long day of travel yesterday, and we were up early today. There were definitely some challenges against us and they responded great. Overall it was just a great meet. We did much better against them than last year and being this close is great motivation for conference.”
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are idle until the Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from March 14-15.

Smith (29th at 197) and A.J. Vizcarrondo (29th at HWT)… These rankings help determine qualifications for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season… Assistant Coach Nick Marable was ranked 10th in the world at 70 kg by United World Wrestling… Marable, volunteer assistant Dom Bradley and operations assistant Clarissa Chun will compete at the Dave Schultz Memorial Invitational in Colorado Springs this weekend.

Last Week in Gymnastics: A season-best floor score helped push WVU to a draw against No. 23 Iowa State at its home opener on Jan. 25 … the teams each scored 194.85 in their Big 12 season openers … No. 25 George Washington took the win with a 195.025 mark … WVU tied for the floor win with a season-high 48.95 and finished second on vault (49.025) and third on bars (48.45) and beam (48.425) … sophomore Alexa Goldberg took the outright bars win with a 9.85, while junior Jaida Lawrence tied for the vault victory with a 9.875 … senior Beth Deal score 9.825 on beam and tied for second … classmate Dayah Haley tallied a season-high 9.85 on floor and also tied for second … sophomore Nicolette Swoboda competed in the all-around for the first time this year and scored 39.0.
