MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two members the West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned postseason honors from Soccer America, as announced by the publication.
Sophomore defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named to the Soccer America Women’s MVP First Team, the publication’s equivalent to a first team All-America honor, while freshman forward Michaela Abam was named to the Soccer America Women’s All-Freshman Second Team.
Buchanan, a native of Brampton, Ontario, is the third Mountaineer named to the MVP First Team, and the first since Amanda Cicchini earned the honor in 2007. Buchanan’s award is the second in as many seasons for WVU, as Frances Silva garnered second-team accolades in 2013.
A two-time NSCAA All-American and a 2014 first-team honoree, Buchanan was a Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy semifinalist. The two-time reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, she also was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI First Team. Additionally, she is a starter for the Canadian Women’s National Team and is the two-time reigning Canadian U-20 Player of the Year.
Buchanan helped the Mountaineer defense post 12 shutouts in 2014, two short of the program single-season record. WVU did not allow a goal on the road in Big play this season. Additionally, Buchanan posted a career-high eight points (3 G, 2 A) this season; her goals and assists totals also were career highs.
Abam, a Houston native, was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. She played in all 22 matches this season and paced the Mountaineers in points (16), goals (8) and game-winning goals (4). Her totals ranked No. 6, No. 4 and No. 2, respectively, in the Big 12. An NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team honoree and a member of the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Freshman First Team, she earned six starts and tallied two two-goal performances.
