Lewis Named Athlete of the Week

Lewis opened the 2015 spring season undefeated in singles play, as she competed against Youngstown State and Pitt. Lewis dominated YSU’s Victoria Ferry in two straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-0, and bested Pitt’s Amanda Wickman (7-5, 6-1).
In doubles action, Lewis partnered with freshman Lyn Yuen Choo to defeat Pitt’s Molly Wickerman and Callie Frey in a tie break (7-6 (4)).
In the 2014 fall season, Lewis stood at a team-best with a record of 11-3 in singles play.
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Ohio State for its first dual match of the season.

This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia travels to Youngstown, Ohio, for the YSU College Invitational this Friday, Jan. 23, at 2:30 p.m.
Last Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers hosted their second of three home meets this indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the WVU Shell Building ... nine season-best marks were during Saturday’s competition.

Coach Sean Cleary: “Today’s meet was a step in the right direction. We put a few more out on the track today after a very rough few weeks of sickness. Shamoya (McNeil) and Katlyn (Shelar) both put up marks that are quite good for this time of the year.”
This Week in Women’s Basketball: WVU hosts K-State in a 7 p.m. ET matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 21 ... Wednesday is Faculty/Staff Night. The Mountaineers then open a two-game road swing at Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 24 ... that game will tip at 2 p.m. ET and air on Fox Sports Net.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia (11-6, 1-4 Big 12) went 1-1 last week ... the Mountaineers fell 55-45 to Texas Tech before rebounding with a 61-49 victory over No. 21/20-ranked Oklahoma State.

This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers are idle this week … WVU travels to Ohio State for its first dual match of the season on Thursday, Jan. 29.
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers opened its 2015 spring season with a combined 13-5 overall record at the Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational … in singles action, freshman Carolina Lewis and Yvon Martinez ended the three-day event undefeated … on day two, the Mountaineers went undefeated in doubles play, defeating host Pitt and Youngstown State.
Coach Miha Lisac: “It was a solid weekend of competition, and we are continuing to get better. There were positive things we saw this weekend, and we will continue to learn throughout competition.”
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The women’s swimming and diving team will travel to Ames, Iowa, for a dual meet against Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 24, at noon ... the men’s squad will be off this week and returns to action next Friday, Jan. 30, at Ohio State.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: The men’s and women’s teams hosted TCU on Friday, Jan. 16, for Senior Night at the WVU Natatorium ... the Mountaineers earned a split with the Horned Frogs with the men coming away with a 192-108 win and the women falling by a slim margin of 155-145.
Notes & Quotes: The win was the men’s second in as many seasons over TCU ... in total, two pool records and one school record was broken in Friday’s meet ... Andrew Marsh set a pool record of 48.27 in the men’s 100-yard backstroke, eclipsing the previous-best mark of 48.44 set by Bryce Bohman in 2013 ... Nate Carr placed first in the men’s 200 IM in a record 1:50.42, breaking the previous record held by Tim Phillips (1:51.19) in 2008 ... Jenn Rey set a school record in the women’s 1-meter dirving with a mark of 292.27 - the previous school record of 290.62 set by Haily VandePoel in 2013.
Coach Vic Riggs: “I think both teams came out and really set the tone on the relays. We had a lot of really good, up-front swims in that first session. Overall, our attitude, our racing and our energy was the best I’ve seen all season.For our ladies to bounce back after a rough showing at Pitt last weekend – to race this well and this confidently – is certainly a step in the right direction for them.”
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are idle until the Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from March 14-15.
Last Week in Rowing: WVU was idle last week and hasn’t competed since the completion of its fall season with a scrimmage against Duquesne, on Nov. 7
This Week in Rifle: WVU rifle is idle this week ... the No. 1- ranked Mountaineers will travel to No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks for two head-to-head matches, January 31-Ferbruary 1, at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Last Week in Rifle: WVU rifle (9-0, 7-0 GARC) defeated Great American Rifle Conference foe No. 7 Nebraska, 4704-4680, Saturday, Jan. 17, at the WVU Rifle Range.
Notes & Quotes: Sophomore Jean-Pierre Lucas placed first in smallbore with 587... it was a season-high and one short of his career-high... junior Michael Bamsey tied for third with two Cornhuskers (584)... junior Patrick Sunderman and senior Ziva Dvorsak tied for sixth with season high 583s... Sunderman shot 200 prone and tied a school record... Dvorsak placed first in air rifle with a 597 (99-99-100-100-99-100) score, one short of her career-high... Bamsey, freshman Elizabeth Gratz and Sunderman tied for third with 592 scores... junior Garrett Spurgeon placed sixth with 590... Sunderman matched his career-high 1175 aggregate score.
Coach Jon Hammond: “It was a solid team result overall. We had a good break. Some people responded better than others, but there was a lot of good stuff today. We have a lot to work on. It’s nice to get that first match out of the way. A lot of them haven’t shot for a while. If we keep working hard and keep training, we should be fine for the rest of the season.”

Last Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers opened Big 12 action in Oklahoma last weekend, falling to the No. 8 Oklahoma State Cowboys 35-3 in Stillwater on Friday before dropping a 25-13 match to Oklahoma on Sunday ... Jake A. Smith went 2-0 on the weekend at 197 pounds, while Bubba Scheffel recorded a major decision at 184 pounds against the Sooners.
Notes and Quotes: Jake A. Smith has now won nine bouts in a row, including a pair of Big 12 matches at 197 pounds… He boasts a 21-9 record overall and an impressive 12-1 mark in dual matches… Bubba Scheffel earned his fourth major decision of the season at 184 pounds vs. Oklahoma… Zeke Moisey and Michael Morales both won in overtime against the Sooners… Morales earned a 9-7 decision vs. Trae Blackwell with a takedown in sudden victory… Moisey earned a 7-3 tiebreaker decision with an escape and a trio of back points… Moisey wins was his 23rd of the season, moving him into the WVU record books tied for 10th place in wins by a freshman.. He needs to more to move into the books in wins at 125 pounds
Coach Sammie Henson: “We won some matches we needed to, with (Zeke) Moisey beating Ryan Millhof for the first time in his career. It was a good win for him,” said coach Sammie Henson. “Mike (Morales) coming back to put that match into overtime and then win was big. Jake Smith and Bubba (Scheffel) stayed with the game plan, and it paid off.”
This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers (1-3) open their 2015 home and Big 12 seasons on Sunday, Jan. 25, against Iowa State and No. 19 George Washington, at 2 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum … it’s “Poster Day,” and the 2015 schedule poster will be available for all fans to pick up … the team will meet with fans and sign posters at “Chalk Talk” following the competition.
Last Week in Gymnastics: Despite several career-best showings, the Mountaineers couldn’t overcome three falls on the uneven bars and finished third in a tri-meet at No. 15 Ohio State on January 17 … WVU tallied a season-high 194.175 … No. 5 Michigan finished first with a 196.975 score, while the Buckeyes tallied 195.025 and placed second … senior Beth Deal earned the squad’s lone victory, tying for first on beam with a season-high 9.875 score … junior Jaida Lawrence tallied the team’s first 9.9+ showing of the season and tied for second on vault … sophomore Alexa Goldberg tallied a season-high 9.875 and finished second on uneven bars, while junior Melissa Idell paced on floor with a season-best 9.8 … the Mountaineers finished first on vault with a 49.2 team score … the squad also finished second on beam with a 48.725 mark, and finished third on floor (48.55) and bars (47.7).
Notes and Quotes: The Mountaineers combined for seven career-best scores on Saturday … WVU’s vault score was its best showing since earning 49.25 at the WVU Coliseum on Feb. 24, 2013 … the squad’s beam total would have ranked fifth among the team’s scores in 2014 … with the losses, WVU dropped to 4-19 against UM and 12-17 against OSU … Sunday is an early rematch against the Colonials, as GW defeated WVU, 194.325-193.5, at Maryland on Jan. 9 … the Mountaineers look for their first win over the Cyclones since defeating ISU, 196.15-194.825, at the Coliseum on Feb. 10, 2013.
