Tennis Finishes Day Two Undefeated

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 17, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team finished undefeated in doubles play at the Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational, in Pittsburgh, earlier today.
Senior Ikttesh Chahal and sophomore Kaja Mrgole went two-for-two on the day. Chahal and Mrgole defeated Pitt’s Lolade Ogungesan and Amber Washington (6-1) and YSU’s Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova with a score of 6-3.
Junior Hailey Barrett and freshman Habiba Shaker went two-for-two on the day as well. Barrett and Shaker bested Pitt’s Katherine Castron and Audrey Ann Blakely with a score of 6-4 and YSU’s Annina Brendel and Nehel Sahni (6-3).
Freshman Lyn Yuen Choo completed the day with a pair of wins, as she partnered with freshman Carolina Lewis to defeat Pitt’s Molly Wickerman and Callie Frey in a tie break (7-6 (4)). In the afternoon session, freshman Yvon Martinez partnered with Choo as they bested YSU’s Victoria Ferry and Julianna Heino with a score of 6-3.
“We made progress in doubles today. We played more aggressive and took advantage of opportunities,” said coach Miha Lisac. “Now, we will get ready for singles action tomorrow.”
The Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational resumes tomorrow with matches starting at 8 a.m.
