Tennis Tallies Four Wins on Day One

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 16, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened spring competition with four victories against Youngstown State in singles play at the Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational in Pittsburgh earlier today.
“It felt great to get the season underway today. I think we put in some good work, and we have something to work with throughout the weekend. It is not about the results, but about overall improvement and continuing to work together as a team to achieve our end goal,” said coach Miha Lisac.
The freshmen class controlled the court as Habiba Shaker, Carolina Lewis and Yvon Martinez swept the Penguins in straight sets. Shaker defeated YSU’s Nehel Sahni with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Lewis bested YSU’s Victoria Ferry in two straight sets (6-1, 6-0), and Martinez defeated YSU’s Julianna Heino in a tie break with a score of 6-4, 7-5.

The Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational resumes tomorrow with matches starting at 9 a.m.
