MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team travels to Pittsburgh to open its 2015 season at the Pitt Nishan Vartabedian Invitational from Jan. 16-18. WVU joins host Pitt and Youngstown State in the three-day event.
The Mountaineers open tournament play against the Penguins in singles action on Friday at 10:30 a.m. On day two, WVU battles the Panthers in doubles play and then comes back in the afternoon session to face Youngstown State. WVU is slated to close out the tournament in singles against the Panthers on Sunday morning.
“We are excited to start with dual-match season, and to gauge where we are at in our second season. The team has been working and preparing throughout the fall semester and it’s time for us to step out and take the challenge against other programs,” said coach Miha Lisac.
WVU is 29-5 all-time against the Panthers, and 2-0 all-time against Youngstown State.
“Our fall season definitely helped us take steps towards improvement. Taking steps forward is always the ultimate goal,” Lisac said. “I feel that we have grown throughout the fall and will be able to take that into the spring semester. Our goals include having a more consistent season and to get our program off the ground.”
This fall, WVU collected a combined overall record of 68-40. Individually, freshman Carolina Lewis stood at a team best with a record of 11-3 in singles play, and freshman Lyn Yuen Choo had a combined record of 16-7. In doubles action, senior Ikttesh Chahal and junior Hailey Barrett went undefeated with a record of 4-0.
