Goldberg Nationally Ranked on Uneven Bars

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore gymnast Alexa Goldberg ranks No. 23 nationally on the uneven bars in the first GymInfo Poll of the season.
The Ivyland, Pennsylvania, native, owns a 9.85 average following her event win at Maryland on January 9. Goldberg earned a 9.9 score from one judge. The event victory was the sixth career win for the two-event specialist.
As a team, the Mountaineers rank No. 20 nationally on vault, sporting a 48.825 average.
Reigning NCAA and Big 12 champion Oklahoma ranks No. 1 after posting a nation-best 197.625 score in its season opener. LSU is No. 2 (197.125 avg.), and Florida is No. 3 (196.925 avg.). Utah ranks No. 4 (196.9 avg.), and Michigan, one of the Mountaineers’ next two opponents, ranks No. 5 (196.6 avg.).
This week’s rankings are based on total season average.
Regionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 5 in the Southeast with a 193.5 average. The squad also ranks No. 5 on vault, bars (48.275 avg.) and balance beam (48.1 avg.). The Mountaineers rank No. 7 (48.3 avg.) on floor.
Goldberg owns the team’s top regional ranking and checks in at No. 6 on bars.
Senior Beth Deal ranks No. 11 (9.775 avg.) on beam. She is followed by juniors Melissa Idell at No. 19 (9.7 avg.) and Lindsey Litten at No. 24 (9.675).
A trio of Mountaineers boast a 9.8 average on vault and rank No. 13: senior Dayah Haley, junior Jaida Lawrence and freshman Zaakira Muhammad. Haley also ranks No. 21 (9.725 avg.) on floor.
The Mountaineers are the Big 12 Conference’s No. 2-ranked team. The squad also ranks No. 2 on vault. WVU ranks No. 3 on bars, beam and floor.
Goldberg ranks No. 3 on bars. On beam, Deal ranks No. 6, while Idell and Litten follow at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. Haley, Lawrence and Muhammad rank No. 7 on vault. Additionally, Haley ranks No. 8 on floor, and Goldberg follows at No. 10 (9.7 avg.).
The Mountaineers (1-1) opened 2015 with a second-place showing at Maryland, scoring 193.5 and defeating the Terrapins (193.025) but falling to George Washington (194.325).
WVU continues its season-opening road trip on Saturday, Jan. 17, at No. 15 Ohio State, with the Wolverines, at 4 p.m., at St. John Arena, in Columbus, Ohio.
