“This is a very talented New Mexico team that advanced to the semifinals of the College Cup last season,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “They are very organized and Jeremy Fishbein has developed this team into a perennial powerhouse. It will be quite a challenge to take on a team of this caliber on the road.”
West Virginia (5-4) is coming off a dominant 2-0 win over Niagara last Friday, outshooting the opponents 25-4. In the victory junior Jamie Merriam notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season and senior goalkeeper Lee Johnston registered his first shutout of the season.
Additionally, senior Andy Bevin has six assists, while freshmen Joey Piatczyc and Louis Thomas have five assists apiece.
New Mexico (5-2-1) dropped in this week’s rankings after being as high as No. 5 last week before falling 2-0 on the road at Charlotte last Friday.
Sophomore Chris Wehan leads the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. Senior James Rogers and senior Oniel Fisher each have two goals, while sophomore Josh Goss has a team-leading two assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu has a 0.79 goals-against average in six games, allowing four goals and making 13 saves with three shutouts.
The Mountaineers and Lobos have only met once before, a 2-0 New Mexico win in 2005 at a neutral site in Dallas, Texas.
