MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Taking a break from league action, the West Virginia University volleyball team will wrap up its nonconference slate when it travels to Huntington on Wednesday for a tilt with in-state foe Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center. The match time has been moved to 6 p.m.
“We are really looking forward to traveling back down to southern West Virginia to play,” said coach Jill Kramer. “We spent a good amount of time in the southern part of the state during our preseason and made some wonderful friends during our visit. This is a great opportunity for WVU fans in that area who may have a harder time making it to Morgantown to see our team compete.”
The Mountaineers (11-4, 1-1 Big 12) and the Herd (8-9, 3-0 Conference USA) have met 46 times since 1974, with WVU leading the all-time series 28-18. However, Marshall has taken two of the last three meetings, with West Virginia’s most recent victory coming in the form of a 3-0 victory at the WVU Coliseum in 2010.
West Virginia is coming off a 3-1 Big 12 win at Texas Tech, halting the Red Raiders’ win streak at 13 and handing them their first loss of the season. Jordan Anderson led the squad with 24 kills, tying her career high. Coincidentally, the last time she put up 24 kills was against Marshall in 2013.
Nikki Attea, who had a career night against No. 2 Texas on September 24, just missed a career best with 16 digs and added 10 kills for a double-double at TTU. For her efforts, Attea was named the WVU Student-Athlete =-of the Week. She finished the week ranking eighth in the Big 12 in kills and digs per set.
Anderson, Gianna Gotterba and Lamprini Konstantinidou joined Attea in the Big 12’s top-10 rankings in week five. Anderson was second in kills (4.78) and points per set (5.06) and finished seventh with 3.44 digs per set. Gotterba was fourth in that category with 4.00 digs per set, while Konstantinidou was the Big 12 leader with 11.67 assists per set on the week.
WVU will resume conference play this weekend with a trip to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State on Saturday. The match is set for 2 p.m. ET at the Hilton Coliseum.
