MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The board members of the Division I Administration Cabinet Administrative Committee have selected West Virginia’s rowing coach Jimmy King to serve as a member of the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee through 2016.
“This is an institution with an extraordinary collection of coaches, and I look forward to watching coach King represent WVU and the Big 12 Conference at the NCAA level,” said Oliver Luck, Director of Athletics. “It is important to provide service at the NCAA level and WVU has been well-represented.”
King, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, is only the second WVU coach named to an NCAA Sport Committee.
King joins seven members, including one from each of the five Division I women’s rowing regions (New England, Central, Mid-Atlantic, West and South) and two selected at large.
“I’m honored and eager to serve on the NCAA Women’s Rowing Committee, representing West Virginia University and the Big 12 Conference,” coach King said.
As a member of the committee, King serves as the rules-making body for collegiate rowing, placing emphasis on sporting behavior. He also assists in the approval for selection of teams to the national championships each year, and serves as a member of the games committee at the national championships.
In addition, he assists in the review of all bids for future sites and ensures that the proposed formats for events meet the committee’s established guidelines. King also assists in updating the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships Handbook, championships operations manual and committee policies and procedures manual sections as assigned by chair.
“This is a valuable opportunity for me to learn and to interact at the NCAA committee level and I look forward to the process,” coach King said.
King, entering his seventh season as head coach, has made tremendous strides with the team since taking over leadership responsibility during the 2007-08 season. During the 2011-12 season, King oversaw the advancement of all four crews to the Knecht Cup Regatta Grand Finals for only the fourth time in program history, including two top-10 finishes.
Currently, King serves as a member on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Board of Directors and as the chair of the CRCA Division I Awards Committee. King also served as a member of the CRCA Division I Polling Committee from 2004-2009.
