MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior Nikki Attea of the WVU volleyball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
A East Amherst, New York, native, Attea had a career day in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to No. 2 Texas on Wednesday, Sep. 24, leading the Mountaineers with a career-high 20 kills. She hit .381 in the match with an ace and 14 digs for a double-double on the day.
Attea just missed her career best with 16 digs in a 3-1 win over Texas Tech on Saturday, Sep. 27. She had 10 kills for another double-double, and recorded a service ace and an assist.
Attea finished the weekend ranked in the top 10 in the Big 12 in both kills and digs.

Coach Sean Cleary: “There has been very little movement in the national polls through the month of September. The rankings will see big changes over the next few weeks as races take on a very different dynamic now that the evaluations for NCAA qualifying are in effect.”
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will travel to Akron for three days of competition from Oct. 3-5.
Last Week in Tennis: WVU opened the 2014 fall season with a combined 20-5 overall record at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts in the Pink Invitational ... three different Mountaineers ended the three-day event undefeated ... they were senior Ikttesh Chahal, junior Hailey Barrett and freshman Carolina Lewis ... Chahal partnered with Barrett for a 3-0 mark in doubles play ... freshmen Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez and Lewis made their debut in the Old Gold and Blue, and tallied their first career wins ... sophomore Kaja Mrgole tallied a team-high 15th singles match win of her career.
Coach Miha Lisac: “This weekend was a step in the right direction for our program. We showed a good fight and resiliency in singles play,” coach Lisac said. “In doubles we wil continue to work on aggressive play and execution.”
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers open their 2014-15 season with their annual Gold-Blue Meet on Friday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m., at the WVU Natatorium.

Notes & Quotes: WVU is primed for its third season in the Big 12 Conference and its eighth under the direction of head coach Vic Riggs … last season saw the men record a 23rd overall finish at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and a third-place result in the Big 12 Conference, while the women finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships … the men’s squad returns 16 members from last year’s team and welcomes 13 newcomers ... the women return 18 student-athletes while bringing in eight newcomers.
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers open their 2014-15 fall season at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, Pa. this Saturday, Oct. 5 ... WVU varsity squad will be racing three 8+ boats a well as four 4+ crews starting at 9:20 a.m.
