Three Go Undefeated as WVU Excels at Home

MORGANTOWN W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened the 2014 fall season with a 20-5 combined overall record at the Pink Invitational. The three-day event took place on the Mountaineer Tennis Courts from Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28.
“This weekend was a step in the right direction for our program. We showed a good fight and resiliency in singles play,” coach Miha Lisac said. “In doubles we will continue to work on aggressive play and execution.”
WVU faced off against Cleveland State in the afternoon singles session.
Freshman Lyn Yuen Choo bested CSU’s Mathilde Orange in two straight sets. Choo captured the first set in a tie break, and then dominated the second set, 6-1. Senior Ikttesh Chahal defeated CSU’s Bensimon in two sets, with a 6-4 victory as well as a 6-4 victory in the second.
Junior Hailey Barrett made her debut in singles play defeating CSU’s Princess Gbadamosi in two straight sets.
Three different Mountaineers ended the three-day event undefeated. They were Chahal, Barrett and freshman Carolina Lewis.
Chahal partnered with Barrett for a 3-0 mark in doubles play. Individually, Chahal went 3-0 in singles, and Barrett captured her first singles win of the season. Lewis went 3-0 on the weekend defeating Jana Schober of Cleveland State, 6-2, 6-4 in singles play.
“Next weekend will be a good challenge for us at Akron, and we will go back to work on Tuesday to prepare for the upcoming tournament,” Lisac said. “It was a good weekend, and we want to thank the whole staff for assisting in organizing the tournament and making the weekend a success.”
WVU returns to action next weekend at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
