West Virginia University rifle team members competed today at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Granada, Spain.
Junior Garrett Spurgeon competed in the junior men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and finished 11th overall with a score of 1161 (392 kneeling, 394 prone, 375 standing). In the team competition, Spurgeon’s score counted toward a sixth-place finish for Team USA (3448), along with Tim Sherry (1140) and Lucas Kozeniesky (1147).
“Obviously I wanted to make the final,” Spurgeon said. “Eleventh in the world is nothing be ashamed of, and I’m proud of my performance today.”
Senior Meelis Kiisk, competing for his home country of Estonia, shot 1139 (373 kneeling, 397 prone, 369 standing) in the men’s 300m rifle 3 positions for 25th overall. His score counted toward a seventh-place finish for the Estonian Team (3382), along with Ain Muru (1119) and Aivar Kuhi (1124).
Today’s competition concludes the Mountaineers’ participation in the Championship. The team will return to the WVU Rifle Range and open its season on Oct. 12 against TCU.
