West Virginia University rifle junior Garrett Spurgeon competed in the junior men’s 50m rifle prone competition today at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Granada, Spain.
Spurgeon, shooting for the United States, placed 32nd overall in today’s qualification round with a 611.7 score.
“Conditions were rough,” Spurgeon said. “I shot a decent match, but when it came down to the decimals, it didn’t show. “
Spurgeon also shot in the junior men’s 50m rifle prone team competition for USA. Spurgeon (611.7), Timothy Sherry (617.0) and Remington Perry Lyman (611.0) combined for a fifth place, 1839.7 aggregate score.
“I’m shooting with the best juniors in the world, and to still end up with a fifth-place team result, I am content for now,” he said. “The 3 position competition is Friday, and I will be training the next two days to give 100 percent for that.”
Of note, three-time NCAA Champion and former Mountaineer Petra Zublasing placed fifth in the women’s 50m rifle prone competition with a 624.0 showing on Monday.
Eric Uptagrafft, also a WVU alum, placed fourth in the men’s rifle prone competition on Monday, scoring 598 (100, 100, 99, 100, 99, 100).
The championship, held every four years and in between Olympic Games, is the first competition in which shooters have the opportunity to earn Olympic quota places, a starting position to send athletes to the next Olympics.
