MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After two top-five finishes to begin the season, the West Virginia University cross country team ranks No. 21 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll released today.
“This ranking seems about right. Most teams are really trying to find themselves right now,” said coach Sean Cleary. “Starting next weekend, the results have a direct impact on determining the national field and such carry tremendous weight.”
The Mountaineers, who rank No. 4 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, opened the season by winning the Lehigh Invitational on August 29, followed by a fifth-place finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational last weekend.
It marked the first time since 2011 that West Virginia recorded back-to-back top-five results to begin a season.
“The next few meets will give us a clearer picture of the landscape of our rankings,” Cleary said. “For now, we will keep working hard and putting together our very best team.”
Sydney Scott finished second overall the Lehigh Invitational, while Brynn Harshbarger was the first Mountaineer to cross the line, finishing in sixth place overall (21:25), at the Spiked Shoe Invite. Harshbarger trimmed 14 seconds off her season-best 6k time.
