Buchanan Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a weekend that saw her showoff her defensive and offensive prowess, sophomore defender Kadeisha Buchanan of the No. 13 women’s soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Buchanan, a Brampton, Ontario, native, helped the Mountaineers dig out of a hole against No. 16 Georgetown Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, scoring her third goal of the season in the 27th minute and knotting the score at 1-1. Posted inside the box, Buchanan corralled the ball after a touch from sophomore defender Carly Black, and falling down, got a shot off that went to the left corner. WVU settled for a 1-1 double-overtime draw against GU.
The Mountaineers returned to DDSS on Sunday and earned a 4-1, comeback win over Duquesne.
Buchanan was instrumental in the Mountaineers holding the Hoyas and the Dukes to seven combined shots on-goal. Through eight matches, WVU opponents have tallied 24 shots on-goal and earned nine goals.
WVU is riding a five-match unbeaten streak.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU went 0-2 last week with a 3-2 loss to UC Irvine on Thursday at home and a 1-0 loss at Elon on Sunday … the Mountaineers currently have a 3-3 record.

This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers and their 10-match win streak travel to North Carolina to take on a pair of ranked opponents as part of the Big 12-ACC Challenge ... Last Week in Volleyball: The West Virginia University volleyball team went 4-0 to win the Mountaineer Invitational and run its winning streak to 10 straight matches, tying the school’s NCAA-era record ... the Mountaineers dropped their first set in two weeks but rebounded to down Kent State, 3-1, behind Jordan Anderson’s 19 kills on Friday afternoon ... later that evening, Anderson had 19 more kills as WVU took a 3-0 win from Seton Hall ... on Saturday, the Mountaineers won a 3-1 contest vs. Saint Francis behind Evyn McCoy’s 19 blocks ... West Virginia then swept Montana 3-0 for their tenth straight win ... Jordan Anderson was named Tournament MVP while Evyn McCoy and Lamprini Konstantinidou joined her on the all-tournament team.
Coach Jill Kramer: “It was great for the team to finish in a good fashion. Four matches is a lot in the course of a weekend. It’s not like we got a lot of people in since we’re still working on some continuity within our lineup and making sure our tempo is good offensively – different things like that. I thought we handled things really well and stayed focused throughout matches. I like the way our offense was clicking throughout each one.”

This Week in Cross Country: The No. 20 Mountaineers will be idle this week and return to competition on October 4 at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky.
Last Week in Cross Country: No. 20 West Virginia recorded a top-five finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, finishing fifth overall … Brynn Harshbarger cut 14 seconds off her season-best 6k time, coming in sixth place overall in 21:25.
Notes & Quotes: For the first time since 2011, the Mountaineers have recorded back-to-back top-five finishes in their first two meets of the season … Renee Maisonneuve finished 18th overall (21:57), Rachel Faulds placed 30th (22:26) and Lydia Martinelli finished 35th (22:44), helping West Virginia to a team score of 133.
Coach Sean Cleary: “We had some very good performances from our young kids in more of a pressure situation. Today shows me that we have a few more young ladies who are stepping up and want a piece of the championships.”
