West Virginia University rifle junior Garrett Spurgeon competed in the junior men’s 10m air rifle competition today at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Granada, Spain.
Spurgeon, shooting for the United States, scored 613.4 (100.6, 102.8, 102.5, 103.4, 102.6, 101.5) for 46th overall in the qualification round.
“With a little lower performance today than I wanted, I’m going to hold my head up and get in the smallbore range tomorrow,” Spurgeon said. “There are still two matches left, and I am going to keep pushing and hopefully be competitive in them.”
Competition continues tomorrow with the women’s 50m rifle prone.
The championship, held every four years and in between Olympic Games, is the first competition in which shooters have the opportunity to earn Olympic quota places, a starting position to send athletes to the next Olympics.
