The Mountaineers (3-2) and Phoenix (2-2-1) have met three times on the pitch since their inaugural match during the 2009 non-conference season. Elon holds the series advantage at 1-0-2. In 2012, Elon scored two goals in the final four minutes to defeat WVU, 3-2, in Morgantown.
The Phoenix have wins against Loyola Marymount and Winthrop, and have posted three shutouts. Most recently, Elon played to a 0-0 draw against Florida International on Wednesday evening.
Leading the Elon attack this season are junior midfielder Miguel Salazar, junior midfielder James Brace and junior defender Nathan Diehl. Salazar has two goals, while Brace and Diehl each have one goal.
This will be the first of three-consecutive road games for the Mountaineers as they look to get back in the win column after dropping back-to-back matches to St. Francis (Pa.) and No. 9 UC Irvine.
The Mountaineers feature a diverse attack with senior forward Andy Bevin leading the way with three goals and five assists. Junior midfielder Jamie Merriam has four goals in as many games this season, while freshman midfielder Jad Arslan has two goals.
After facing Elon, WVU will return to North Carolina to face High Point on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers will then travel for a midweek contest at James Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
