MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Following a week off from competition, the No. 20-ranked West Virginia University cross country team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania., for the 2014 Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State.
Named after the long-time Nittany Lion men’s track and field and cross country coach Harry Groves, the event will begin at 10 a.m., with the women’s collegiate 6K.
“Penn State is always a very meaningful trip for our group,” said West Virginia coach Sean Cleary. “We always want to familiarize the team with future NCAA courses, and this weekend is no exception.”
The course at Penn State will also serve as the host of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional later in the season on November 14.
“We have so much experience on this course,” Cleary said. “We will know a lot more about ourselves after Saturday.”
The Mountaineers recorded a first-place finish at the Lehigh Invitational to kick off the season on August 29, posting a team score of 25, besting second-place Lehigh by 24 points. West Virginia runners accounted for four of the first five overall finishers.
Sydney Scott, a 2012 All-Mid-Atlantic Region honoree, was the first Mountaineer to cross the line, finishing in second place overall in 21:36.56. Brynn Harshbarger (21:39.58), Renee Maisonneuve (22:10.12) and Rachel Faulds (22:22.94) posted third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
“We were hoping to add a few more ladies to the lineup this weekend but will hold off until our meet at Louisville,” Cleary said. “Untimely sickness and a few aches and pains have changed the lineup.”
West Virginia will be competing in the Spiked Shoe Invite for the third straight season. WVU finished eighth at the event a season ago and fourth in 2012.
