MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20-ranked West Virginia cross country team won the Lehigh Invitational, today, in its 2014 season opener in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Mountaineers posted a team score of 25, besting second-place Lehigh by 24 points. West Virginia runners accounted for four of the first five overall finishers.
“This was a nice little confidence boost for this group,” said coach Sean Cleary. “The weather turned out to be a little better than we anticipated. This race shows us that we have the makings of some depth on the squad.”
Sydney Scott, a 2012 All-Mid Atlantic Region honoree, was the first Mountaineer to cross the line, finishing in second place overall in 21:36.56. Brynn Harshbarger (21:39.58), Renee Maisonneuve (22:10.12) and Rachel Faulds (22:22.94) posted third, fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
“In some cases we saw a few minutes improvement over last year’s results. As we continue to add some key components to the roster, we should really get a clear picture of who we are and how far we can go,” Cleary said. “I am very pleased with the way the girls let the race unfold around them and ran so impressively over the last two miles. It's early, but it's a nice start.”
Other notable West Virginia finishes include Brianna Kerekes who finished in 11th overall (23:04.53), Lydia Martinelli who placed 20th (23:29.36) and Allie Diehl who finished 21st overall (23:31.76).
The Mountaineers have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the PSU Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania.
