“Coach Sean Cleary and his staff annually schedule strategically in order to post their top performances when it matters most at the end of the season,” Luck said. “After six NCAA qualifications in the last seven seasons, I’m looking forward to watching this program continue to climb on the national stage.”
For the second straight season, Cleary and the Mountaineers kickoff the campaign at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Aug. 29.
“This schedule follows a traditional philosophy of the program. We will visit courses early in the season that we will at some point in the future return to for our major championships,” said Cleary. “Lehigh, Penn State and Louisville will at some point in the next year host the NCAA Regional or NCAA Championships. We like to get the group used to courses that they will eventually experience a great deal of pressure on.”
West Virginia will travel to the PSU Spike Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania (Sept. 13), the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky (Oct. 4), and the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin (Oct. 17).
“As in another tradition, the early meets will allow newcomers the opportunity to earn their way onto championships squads. Something new for the group this season is the national class meet at Wisconsin prior to the Big 12 meet,” Cleary said. “Meets like Wisconsin are a great opportunity to help earn our way into the NCAA finals.”
The 2014 Big 12 Cross Country Championships will be held in Lawrence, Kansas, on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Mountaineers placed second at the conference meet a season ago.
Penn State will serve as host of the 2014 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet on Friday, Nov. 14. West Virginia finished fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region last season, securing its qualification for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
“Our goals are always the same with a team such as this one,” Cleary said. “We prepare first and foremost for the NCAA finals. Along the way, we must be ready for a very competitive Big 12 meet. Championships are always at the forefront of our minds – they always will be.”
For the second straight year, Indiana State will host the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana. The meet will serve as the final event of the season and will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22.
