MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A total of 363 West Virginia University student-athletes were recognized for their achievement in the classroom Thursday evening at the first-ever Blue & Golden Globe Awards Dinner, presented by the WVU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
All honored student-athletes were named to the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, an award implemented in 1989 and created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. Since the program began, more than 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Student-athletes from WVU’s sports teams gathered at Touchdown Terrace at Milan Puskar Stadium for dinner and fellowship.
Women’s cross country and men’s soccer earned the Team Highest GPA Award for the 2013 spring and fall semesters. Additionally, five student-athletes earned the 4.00 GPA Award: Liz Gulick (volleyball), Amanda Hill (women’s soccer), David Palley (men’s swimming and diving), Kelly Williams (women’s track and cross country) and Jenelle Zee (women’s swimming and diving).
Bryce Bohman of the men’s swimming and diving team received the Male Student-Athlete Community Service Outreach Award, while Elizabeth Duarte of rowing received the Female Student-Athlete Community Service Outreach Award. Men’s swimming and diving was recognized with the team award for community service outreach.
